I have the older version of this and while the battery is not meant to be user serviceable, replacing it yourself is both easy and cheap. A new battery is about $15 on Amazon and replacing it just involves using a shim to pop the case open. ifixit.com has a guide.
Your advice is still good advice. I'm just saying it's not the end of the world if you do have to replace the battery.
This same unit was on SD a couple weeks ago for $108 shipped direct from FLIR. Received mine before Christmas, works great btw.
You can use the real deal ( Flir or Fluke) for free ( SF for me or check your Utilty Co. ) https//pge.myturn.com/library/ Free tool loan!

Can this be used to find mice in the home? Serious question. TIA
maybe at night without anything obstruction between the critter and camera.. But to see one behind the wall and or in the attic is not practical .. The actual flir website shows the outline of a rat behind the ceiling of a roof promoting that it can see not only the heat signature but also the outline of an actual rat... I purchased the PRO version not the cheaper Pro LT version listed here and my experience would give the rating of fair to poor for the purposes of critters behind walls.. Also . it would not see a stud behind thin sheetrock and it advertised on the flir website it would do that as well.
Can use this to see animals in the dark while camping?
this has very poor distance for seeing a raccoon in a tree.. But it is not built for that..
Flir has a line of "thermal image monoculars" for that purpose.
Hmm i can really use this... has anyone tried hooking this up to a Drone? i'd like to get some data on my semi sloped roof that doesn't have a hatch to access it.
this is not near that good for your purpose.. I bought the Pro version , not the cheaper pro lt version listed here and it would not see a stud behind thin sheetrock walls. (even though the website gives examples that it would) ..
would not buy especially with only one year warranty and not for $170. Maybe would consider with 2 years warranty or for $100 if really needed it.
There is some design flaw re some cheap small internal lipo battery that makes device useless when that baterry ages.
Someone ( Flir troll? ) says:
>>> replacing battery yourself is both easy and cheap.
Had to buy battery on ebay and not amazon
it is not that easy and when i replaced mine the device was still not working. Amber light and not turning on.
That's the experience of many other people. Search google "flir amber light"
So i purchased last night, and registered on the site when i purchased. Have not received any order confirmation, and it won't let me log into the site, and i've tried to reset password, and hasn't sent a reset emails to this point, but it is showing on my bank account already. Anyone else with similiar issues?
That all depends on if the wet area is of significantly different temperature than the roof decking. It definitely does not detect water. Only differences in temp between surfaces. So, yes and no. Izzample: very hot day in the summer - pop up thunderstorm - water will be much colder than roof decking. during the winter it may only work if there was direct sun on the roof before the rain. three cloudy/rainy days in a row in the middle of winter, there will be less temp difference between the dry roof decking and the wet roof decking.
Another factor is how well-insulated and air-sealed your attic "floor" is. If poorly insulated or air-sealed (e.g. big gaps around ceiling penetrations and attic stairs etc), then a lot of house heat will escape into the attic which will warm the attic and the roof decking. I bring mind on every home inspection
I have a Seek IR compact camera for my phone. 206 x 156 resolution. Does NOT have separate battery (a very big plus for me). I bring my IR camera with me on every home inspection I do and rarely use it because I can spot leaks visually that the camera cannot. I let clients try it out who are curious and they soon realize it isnt remotely as useful as come claim. Had a lot of buzz 4 years ago or so. The one thing it is great for is seeing where there is missing insulation in a vaulted ceiling where you cannot see visually.
Now, with a high end IR standalone camera, it might be different. But I stopped using mine log ago except the scenario described above.
Note that my experience is only with the Seek, not the Flir.
I have the FLIR one 2. I guess it is little better than this one. But I can absolutely always see water leaks. Standing water is always cooler than it's ambient environment. I can always see the studs in a wall. I can see small warmth behind something. I once held my hand to some Sheetrock in the attic and went and found the warm spot with my FLIR. A mouse might be a bit small, but a sleeping mouse touching the wall would show up. It might be hard to notice, but it would be a warm bump. I can find my cat hiding anywhere. But that is much bigger.
I'm not sure if people have bad cameras or their apps aren't working, but mine is extremely sensitive. I can see hot and cool spots on my leg that I can't even perceive.

The micro-usb version was on sale for $299. Looks like they just raised the price again.

You can, but you won't find any.

Can it tell or convert the temperature on an image area?
