I have the older version of this and while the battery is not meant to be user serviceable, replacing it yourself is both easy and cheap. A new battery is about $15 on Amazon and replacing it just involves using a shim to pop the case open. ifixit.com has a guide.

Your advice is still good advice. I'm just saying it's not the end of the world if you do have to replace the battery.

This same unit was on SD a couple weeks ago for $108 shipped direct from FLIR. Received mine before Christmas, works great btw.

Well that's pretty freaking awesome for Californians. Even lower end models usually rent out for $50+ per day. Wish you had been more clear that it's just a local thing. Really got my hopes up that this was some awesome nationwide service I'd never heard of! I should have known better.

I feel like this is one of those things you buy and use once or twice in your life and then never again like the boroscope/inspection camera I bought years ago. LOL
Also fish tape, torque wrench, etc etc.

I bet if you are to do it again in a day of greater in/out door temperature differential, you will be able to see the stud. This device is IR detector. The thermo conduction of wall material should be very different from that of a stud.
