I'm thinking of starting with the generic cartridges while I am still within the return window for printer&toner, just in case i have any compatibility issues.
I just picked the cheapest generics which seemed like they had decent reviews and specified they have chips. Hopefully they work and i can keep the oem starters as backups.
edit: I called Canon tech support. The rep said it should warn you before there are any updates. This seemed to support what I observed in the menu, contrary to other models where I saw users posted the path to the menu setting toggle auto-updates on/off.

It may limit some of the printers other abilities (mobile printing, maybe?), but its a quick fix, and probably the option I would chose. I don't need/want peripherals like this "phoning home" to Canon with "anonymous" usage information.
