How could you? It goes against all your principles. Or was the made in China the surprise? I think I saw somewhere that some sets were made in Taiwan and some in China?

I know, I know.... when delivered, it was on the outside and forgot to return. It is now in the gift pile... along with the 84935N and 84933N that are also made in China. Pretty much a complete set with all 3, it was disappointing.

Maybe some older stock from a few years ago were made in Taiwan, but just looked and I bought these 3 sets in October of 2019.... so I have to guess that all being sold today are made in China.

I suppose it is a bit ludicrous to expect J.H. Williams, Knipex, Klein, etc. quality for 'pol pot metal' pricing.

Gearwrench is going to be just like Sears with their Craftsman warranty.... you will be trading in a decent quality tool for a junk replacement tool. It will really suck if Knipex starts outsourcing like some Metabo went. "Here Sir, a brand new replacement for your broken German made for a 'superior' Chinese knock off model." ... kind of along the lines of 'resistance is futile.' Smilie

I have a feeling we would get along well. I stick with a brand until they go that route. Then they're dead to me. I have older versions of this set, and the 1/4" and 1/2". Made in TW and they've been very reliable.

I was going to send this link to some friends until I saw the 'Made in China' comments. I'm not super old but I'm at the point where I don't have time to mess with junk tools. Get halfway into a job and it shears like it's made of stale licorice. Then deal with the replacement that is a sloppily remanufactured, cost-down version? Nah. Why not just by 3x of everything from Harbor Freight at that point for the same money.

Anyway... I can at least say the original version of this set is awesome. They grip well and I haven't broken a single one yet. The case is also handy because it comes apart and fits in my drawers as-is, and I can put it back together and close it up if I have to go work outside of the shop. The etching on the sockets is super easy to read as a bonus.

I have never broken a HF impact socket and I have abused them with cheater bars where I expected to break a name brand socket.... and why I used the HF.

That said, HF has improved their game with better grades from Taiwan; maybe the old Gearwrench factories that moved to China. As well, there are hundreds of items in the store that are made in the USA.
