$99 deposit? Classic Musk. Still waiting on that Cybertruck that I put a deposit on! Just plan on Starlink NOT hitting any of their self imposed timelines.

Think about a cell tower as a wifi hotspot. There are only so many devices they can connect before it gets overwhelmed. Aside from the purely technical limits, they still have to be able to provide good cell service.

So they have to look at their usage patterns per tower to see how much they can devote to an always-connected device. On a tower near an interstate or a popular recreation location, they may only be able to spare a handful of slots. Towers serving mostly corn fields could have dozens.

Its nice to have another option on the market but right now my neighbor can't sign up for the same service I have because the slots are gone....
Except that cell towers have multiple terabit backhauls and several parallel bands containing multiple frequencies in each.

Its like comparing a house to a skyscraper.

In some towns, a single cell tower has enough coverage and bandwidth to cover all the cellular devices in the entire town of 20,000 people, simultaneously.

Did you read their webpage? It specifically states the satellites are designed to burn up with a degrading orbit when lifespans have been reached. That means no junk floating around.

I'll be onboard in a heartbeat when Starlink becomes available in my area. I've been with Viasat since they were WildBlue when they only had one satellite (Old Bird), and they are as sleazy as they come. Bye-bye.

That said; I'm not sure that there's any burning need to jump on a Pre-Order list. The cost of equipment, taxes and service fees will price a fair number of people out. We're still in the blue sky phase of this enterprise, and Elon tends to talk a lot of shite. I'd like to see how real Starlink continues to be once it gets past Beta.

And finally - no. The Starlink business model is not designed to roll out to every Shekgalagari village in Botswana. While it would be nice to ensure that every amenity is available globally for a tiny fraction of what it costs to provide, that's a "somebody else's money" solution.

Oh it's on a webpage. That changes everything. As long as Spacelink doesn't have write access to their own website, then the information will always be unbiased.

Sucks to live ~10 miles from downtown LA in a pretty population dense area and being stuck with 13Mb down/1Mb up ADSL2. I could drive less than 5 minutes east or west and 75Mb/20Mb would be available. Pocket of sucky internet.

For rural area, i think starlink is a revolution since cable run at potato speed for $60-80/month internet only plan
Yes! My friend in rural PA can only get 5mbps. That's the only option for them. At My mountain house my only option is 50mbps and pay $120 a month for it.

Check TMO home internet
I tried. It wasn't available in my area just yet. Also my current Sprint 5G phone gets faster speeds while connected to 4G, so 5G isn't really activated yet. What I'm using right now is an unlimited Sprint 4G hotspot.

I am a tower technician for the largest tower installation company in the country, American Tower, which maintains over 40,000 towers.
