Low is relative. Starlink isn't currently meant to be a replacement for wired connections. It's for people that don't have that option which is a huge percentage of the country and it's much faster and cheaper than anything those areas have ever had access to.
Not really ! See my comment for all of the details but I live in a rural area with no cable and I get in the range of 30mbps to 100 mbps download with a typical speed of about 60 to 70 mbps and a fairly constant 25 ms latency off of a 4G Lte cell tower with a SIM card modem and an RV plan. I have an absurdly cheap grandfathered plan but even today an unlimited data plan can be had in the $50 to $70 per month range — at least last I looked. Even for those who don't live within 25 miles or so of a cell tower you can get a YAGA antenna for maybe $100 or so . If you don't need a YAGA then there is nothing to set up. Just turn on your modem and enjoy.

For rural area, i think starlink is a revolution since cable run at potato speed for $60-80/month internet only plan
You can go hiking, camping, or to the middle of the ocean and still get Internet at reasonable speeds.

Starlink is a steal at this price.

I have 2 LTE modems, a 1200$ Wilson booster and its on a 20' tower. There are times with my setup I get a wonderful connection allowing the stream of HD quality video however its normal for me to get between 1.5-3Mb/s down and .1Mb/s up. Latency is consistently between 30-40ms. Also its noticeable that bandwidth is much better late at night and early morning but throughout the day it deteriorates at times to a point of unusable around 5-8pm. I currently spend $45 a month on a backup 1.5Mb/s DSL connection and since I'm 25K feet of copper out I shouldn't have that. The two LTE connections cost nearly 80$ a month by the time you add tax and fees. I have 1 thats dedicated to 1 PC (vpn for example) and another that's shared like the scraps amongst angry wolves (aka the kids using it on their portable devices and such).

Glad the YAGA (I assume you actually mean YAGI antenna) works for you it does not for me or others I know.

Starlink if it offers a reliable 10+mbps will allow me to get rid of a DSL connection and an LTE connection. It will also allow my kids to see that the large flat box on the wall is capable of more than 320P worth of pixels.

For most people in the rural sections of the US with no cable this isn't competitive unless SL significantly increases those speeds. If you live anywhere near a cell tower get a modem/router that takes a SIM card and sign up for an RV plan with the carrier or one of the carriers on that tower. Check the RV fan web sites for all of the details, and for the modem reviews, plan reviews etc. I recommend the MOFI modem/router but I have not kept up with all of the latest. if you are somewhat distant from a cell tower you may need to get an outdoor YAGA antenna to amplify the signal— that is maybe $100– not sure. For me living in a fairly rural area but not too far from a 4G LTE tower I get in the range of 30mbps to 100 mbps download and about 10mbps to 40mbps upload depending on the time of day etc . Most of the time it is around 60 mbps to 70mbps down. Latency is fairly constant at about 25ms . Plans range from $25 /mo with data limits to the $50 to $70 per month range for unlimited data use last I looked
Cell carriers limit your speed once you hit their data cap. With unlimited there is still a data cap bu just larger. I get a good 80+mbps down and 22+mbps up on AT&T 4gLTE in my area but they do not offer a home plan and with the data limitations they impose I don't think it is a great deal. If they ever open up 4g/5g home service then starlink is going to fail unless they drastically reduce pricing, in the USA anyway. It would still be viable around the globe in areas where cell coverage is only by satellite phone.

so you refer to "real data" but you don't provide an actual reference. Way to go bro. Very convincing vs FCC data.

Why FCC data is garbage has been widely reported. Guess you missed it.

Here's Microsoft with actual user data instead of the trash "if anyone in your entire zip code has broadband, everyone does" measure:

https://blogs.microsoft.com/on-th...americans/

162.8 million unable to use the internet at broadband speeds in the US.

That's about half the population of the country.

I would not trust anything important in my life to Elon musk. Will not drive in cars built in tents with poor quality nor would I trust him with my internet connection. he probably thinks his subscribers are just part of his personal botnet.

MEANWHILE BACK IN REALITY-

https://www.consumerreports.org/c...ar-brands/

Tesla, once again, #1 in owner satisfaction by a wide margin among all car brands per Consumer Reports.

They've been #1 every single year they've been included in the survey.

Expensive, who cleans up the crap all these satellites leave behind?
What crap?

These are tiny satellites that at the end of their useful life burn up in the atmosphere

It's about 5% more than I'm paying for 8mb DSL today, and 10-12x faster now, 120x faster in the future. Not expensive at all.

Quote from KonradU :
Far better solution is to upgrade America's electrical grid and include internet for a real future.
The cost to provide hardwired 100mb (or gigabit as is the future SL plan) to everyone in the US would be insanely insanely higher.

was?

There's still millions who use it today due to lack of any other options.

100mbps is not, at all, typical for fixed wireless.

See the many other fixed wireless customers who've posted in this very thread getting much much lower speeds on average.

So ~100mb typical today, and ~1GB as they get more birds in space, for $99/mo is a fantastic deal.

And as noted even "unlimited" wireless deals usually throttle your speeds badly after a fixed amount of data.

Unless you've been living under a rock there is nothing slick about this deal. Pricing for this service has been readily available for months.

Pricing yes.

AVAILABILITY just changed significantly.

Prior to a couple days ago it was a narrow invite-only beta.

Now anybody can sign up for either a shipping-now or shipping-soon delivery of product.

For folks who've been waiting years for decent broadband that's slick as hell.

The $500 hardware is honestly the biggest joke. At $500 per household. These small rural communities can roll out ftth and apply for the same government money and be up and running before starlink.

However it will be interesting watching the musk vs bezos vs fcc fight. He who spends more money on lobbying will win this one. Bezo being so far behind, he decided he's going to focus on having using the government to make hell for musk. This will be fun to watch, Spending all this money, just to win the rural isp government money.

This is a LOT of work. Keeping a MoFi functional and evading the carrier's attempts to block them from the networks needs time and skill.

Second, the MVNOs/providers you mention are fly by night and inconsistent. They go out of business without notice, they switch carriers often without notice, and can disconnect your service if they decide you consume too much data.

Not to mention, depending where you live, the cost and effort to construct and tune a tower with antennas pointed to the correct tower, and running wires and equipment from outside to inside your house....

This is kindof a no brainer unless you really enjoy the tinkering.

You must not live in an area with no high speed options...i's actually a fair price. Will it get better over time? Sure.

The cost where I live to pull a stable, reliable connection from a wireless rural internet provider was well above $500.

A wireless modem that can do carrier aggregation, has decent antennas and doesn't require me hacking a device or putting it together myself cost more than $500.

A typical Beta tester is getting 100 meg down 30ms ping. Many youtube videos back the numbers up.

For rural areas, it is a godsend. People are lining up to dump their cable for it. Compared to the cost of basic cable it is a very good price. The upfront cost will pay for itself in year one then it is cheaper than cable.

My house has no cell or cable service. The only service i have is DSL and landline. When I plug in the landline my DSL fails. On a good day my dsl is 1.2mbs. My bill is almost 150 a month. We've had hughesnet and cancelled.... it was that bad.

So from my point of view, starlink is a great deal including the $500 equipment cost. If you never lived without all services you will never understand.

I don't mean to be rude, but for those who are complaining about price I want to put things into perspective. I have 1 internet service provider. It cost $159 for 10 mb (Max speed). If I want 25mb it's $249 if I want 50mb it's $499 per month. This is all an "upgrade" as I previously only could get 3mb internet speeds at my house as of 4 years ago at $189 per month. And I do not live in the middle of nowhere either.

I would have killed to have this service available when I was out in deep rural areas. And unless something better is available, i plan to get it in the future as I will be looking for a quiet little cabin in the middle of nowhere as a vaction or similar option. There haws never been anything comparable offered to people who don't get really solid cell reception or live in town, so keep that in mind before talking smack. I might even get it here at my condo with multihoming, if the condo complex will let me (a pretty big if).

As an Electronics Engineer, who hates having my designs lied about by marketing people. I have a big man-crush on Elon Musk for this reason. He says what he actually thinks will be delivered, without fluff, in real measurable terms. Then lets the products prove themselves. And in some cases where results don't meet up with plans, he owns it and says "sorry, we are still working on it"
