The m1 uses unified memory so the ram, cpu, gpu and other components are part of the same chip allowing for much faster read/writes to memory. Don't think user upgradable is even possible here. Plus with how fast it is, I've read the 8gb performs as well as a 16gb machine in the x86 architecture. Remember apple ios devices have a lot less memory than the competition but apple devices always blow away the competition in performance.

As someone who currently own the MBA m1 (8G ram), I would highly recommend go with 16G ram. (Especially for those who would keep lots of tabs/apps open)

Why can't they at least put 16 gigs a memory in these things?

I thought apple comes out with new macs every year or is it just iPhones/iPads? I guess I was thinking and maybe incorrectly that all of apples stuff will be using the same m chips now and just figured they will get chip upgrades yearly. I have no doubt the base would be all I need and last for a long ass time
Not the case for mini. Apple doesn't upgrade mini every year. Unless they change from M1 chip introduction.

Picked this up in Dec at Costco for $670. Love it, it's great. If you're on the fence, grab this.

I also picked up the AGPTEK USB-C Docking Station & Stand for Mac Mini (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1) for $70 from Amazon. I threw a 1 TB SSD in there.

Works great as a second drive, and/or backup drive. Plus it has all of the necessary ports on the front panel. Mac Mini sits on top of it.

$100 off what you'd pay for it at Best Buy today. Plus 2% back on the subtotal for Executive Members and 5% back on the total for Chase Freedom Q1.

Really wish there was stock of 16GB RAM models somewhere..

They seemed to make endless amounts of the base models and very little else.

You are correct (8 vs 7 core GPU and no fan on the MBA). Reviews pretty much across the board indicate that the difference isn't noticeable except under heavy and extended use cases (e.g. rendering a bunch of 4 or 8k video), and even then isn't a huge deal. There have been some big differences between 8 and 16gb performance on very demanding tasks, but means the difference between a 20 min rather than 10 min rendering times on 8k video. I do a lot of video editing with GoPro 4k 100mb/s footage and the 8/256 has done great for me. I do have an external usb-c SSD to store my footage. For 95% of people, the 8/256 Mini or Air are perfect options.

I really wish Apple would come back to reality on the component upgrade prices. You are over $1k if you opt for a 16/512 mini, and approaching $1,500 for an Air, which is pretty steep.

So I have have a 2013 IMac with Retina 1T desktop. It works great still and has a ton of space. Can I use this mini on with the iMac display? Or would you recommend upgrading to the new iMac.... I don't think it has M1 yet available though. I also use it to store pics and surfing... wife just bought the new Air M1 and I figured since my iMac 2013 dosnt want to update to the newest iOS maybe it's time... thanks for any help

Simple, most consumers in their target market won't notice a difference between 8 and 16. Why put 16 if you can save money by putting in 8? Same reason the ram in their phones is nerfed, most people will never notice.

Thanks. That is even better. Then 4% total if executive member. Just ordered one. I was waiting for the deal with Costco. Wth CB and extended warranty, can't beat the deal. And from so many reviews so far memory upgradability is non-factor for M1 architecture.
