Sette 270 is very loud but also grinds 3-4x has fast as others I've used. If it's just for drip/press coffee, Capresso's Infinity conical burr grinder (especially the all metal model) is very quiet and works well. For espresso, the Breville Smart Grinder Pro is pretty quiet too with the cover on.

Do you mean the Smart Grinder Pro? Note - I went from the SGP to the 270wi. Loved the SGP, but the 270 is significantly louder (but quicker!)

For $17 more (tax and shipping included) I could get a brand new encore from Seattle coffee gear.. Is there any added benefit to buying it from Baratza

The one from Baratza is in very good condition and has the same warranty as the new one

No. You get full warranty from any authorized seller, including SCG. Their refurbished units are pretty good, so even with $17 savings, you're not losing out on much. As others have said, their customer service is also excellent, there really stand by their products.

You won't go wrong either way

Depending on your budget, I forget the exact model but Gaggia is the way to go for cheap afaik, Breville Dual Boiler for slightly more, DE1+ For a really nice one... but the sette 270 might not quite match in quality to one.

I want to replace my capresso with an encore but I'll wait for a sale on a new unit even with the extended warranty with amex plat. I believe I saw $110 shipped last year for encore but missed it.

It's hard to find a machine that does both really well. That said, the best bang for your buck is the Breville Smart Grinder Pro. Does espresso decently well, but also drip coffee (not sure of French press, though to be honest you could use a cheap grinder for French).

The Sette, as mentioned above doesn't get coarse enough for drip or French

My 2 cents, from someone that has owned several dozens of grinders (probably more). Stay away from Baratza, too much plastic is used on those grinders which causes two massive problems: 1- those things, specially the Sette series, are LOUD. As in, forget about making coffee at 7 AM unless you want to wake up your entire household. 2- those are, simply put, not reliable. I have seen problems with frame, housing, gears, burr carriers, electrical problems, you name it. Sure, they have good customer service, but why would you want to suffer through it anyway?

i picked up a vario from baratza in last month's sale but the first two had to get sent back as they had defects. just so folks know. returning and replacement is relatively painless except for waiting for one that worked.

as for people looking for advice on grinders or espresso machines look on home barista.com or coffee geek-- they have good threads discussing many questions that have been raised here.

Given my experience, I would have to disagree. When I upgraded from a Capresso Infinity to a Baratza Vario, it was probably one of the single biggest equipment improvements for my espresso (only a close second to moving from a consumer thermocoil based machine to a prosumer double boiler). This was back in ~2014, and it has been working without issue since then, and it was a second-hand used purchase. I did complete the "shim mod", and added the more robust metal portafilter holder, but from a function and durability standpoint, I have had absolutely no issues, and probably averaged ~5-10 shots or pour-overs per week for the majority of that timeframe. (That works out to 20lb/year +/-, a far cry from your 200lbs/yr, but probably fairly typical for a pre-COVID home user.)
The Capresso is by no means a bad machine (especially for the price), but the static and amount of superfines it produced compared to the Vario was indicative of the fact that it is 1/5-1/4 the price of the Vario.

100% the sette 270. You'll probably want to install the little espresso shims that comes with the unit depending. I owned a sette for about 6 months before buying my Nuevo Simonelli Mythos and I'm still impressed at how good the sette was for the money.

I also owned the vario but the sette is better for espresso.
