I still have not used my generic and don't print enough to even finish the starter toner this year. 644 working great for me so nice to not worry about inkjet clog or dealing with my 20yr old Dell MFC rollers.
I have top feeder 644, scans working great legal size double sided scan does almost always be crooked.
My stupidity of not reading the directions and not realizing it feeds slower for thicker paper caused a huge mess on my first one. The toner got all over the inside of the printer because it thought it was printing on regular paper. Canon explained that the toner needs more time to "bake" onto thicker paper and they walked me through self-clean settings, but they didn't work so I returned it.
I thought about looking for 1 with duplex/dual scan, but i would use it so infrequently that I couldn't justify spending much $ on the extra features. I was tired of waiting on a deal for a duplex, and $200 was my signal it was our time to ditch the b&w. Just picked up the replacement last night to give it another go.
I got a lightning deal on some generic 4-pack that i was using on the first one, which i was fine with. After I made the mess, I swapped to the OEMs thinking that might have been the issue, but in the few prints I was able to compare side-by-side, i was unable to tell any difference in quality between canon& generic.
This is basically a nice little luxury for my 2 elementary schoolers to add some color to their hybrid learning and art projects, so top-quality imaging is not on the top of our list. Cheap ink that we can blow through and print like there is no tomorrow was my big requirement.

Calling for service/warranty did require a bit long phone hold time before reaching a rep. Interestingly my orig unit was registered to someone else so they had to correct the info on their end before processing my service order.
