I'll say it again. You can undervolt the processor a good amount: I boosted my 6 core performance 29%, and it runs cooler. You can basically make it as good as a Ryzen (or better) with no risk to hardware. You have total freedom to manipulate power, temperature, and noise to your liking. For instance it runs just as fast at 35W as it did at 45W stock. If I max out the fans and CPU I can run at ~68W and 91C and 4.3MHz on all cores forever.

Undervolting is locked out of most 10th gen CPUs, but MSI allows it. You need to enable it in the bios, and then use Throttlestop. Ryzen processors can't be undervolted.

4th time I've linked in this thread? https://www.techpowerup.com/forum...75.279412/

I'd never done anything like this before. It wasn't hard.

Bought a Lenovo instead.
At what cost, and please provide a link to what you purchased so we can see the specs. Why did your select it over the ASUS STRIX?

I downgrade a little and bought the Lenovo Legion 5 at Walmart for $950.

The 17.3 screen is a little too big imo and no longer makes this portable. It is also a little darker than i like.

Did you check the reviews at Costco? Did others have the same problem?
I had a full warranty and thought MSI would take care of it as it is just a simple key. They claim they are out of stock and will take 2 months to send me a single key.

Doesn't the actions your performed result in overheating potentially causing internal damage in the long run?
No. The CPU and GPU run cooler and quieter when you undervolt. But you get increased performance by boosting frequency within the constraints of your thermal design. Temperatures end up about the same before and after undervolting if you push the machine to the max; it just runs faster. In normal use I have it set so it's cooler and quieter though, and still faster, but that is my choice.

Weird sales job on this OP. This laptop was similarly discounted around black friday, then it was a very good deal. Now with 30x0 launching, it's meh. Just a heads up, I have been a Costco member since before they were "Costco", and love the place. Costco has this happen time and time, their people don't seem to understand that a hot deal is no longer a hot deal half a year later in the computers department. The laptop itself is fine, the price is fine, but if you want best bang for the buck this one no longer is.

Oh, and forget the extra $100 for extended warranty, that's done thru Allstate, and like all insurance companies, your mileage will severely vary, they don't like to pay out, it messes with their profits. Use your executive membership Citi Visa for extra two years, your chances are better there.

Uhm, no. Go ahead and slap yourself for even thinking about it. Or just send me your money, since you like to throw it away...

1. I appreciate your comment. However, it would make sense if you can point to a better deal at a current time. I can't seem to find one.

2. I think it is MSI not COSTCO that decides on the rebate.

I agree but the person who suggested this was speaking from the perspective of giving it to his kid/grandson who is very restless and he suspected that his kid would accidentally drop it or get liquids into it. Credit card warranty doesn't cover accidental damage.

You can find better GPU value for 15 inch models for the 3000 series but for a 17 inch, I don't think so. Can you even find a 17 inch laptop with a 3000 series anywhere right now for under $2000?

In stock: https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/syst...7G-ET99833

This one is a better deal but you'd need to wait: https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/syst...G-R17G-100

Lot's of hate for this company though. I emailed for specs on the GPU and display and got no reply.

What about a laptop from a company that has at least some name brand recognition? I mean Lenovo, Asus, Dell, HP, MSI, and at the bottom Gigabyte (?)

There weren't many 17.3" 'low priced' RTX 2060/2070 deals to choose from past 6 months. This MSI GE75 2060/2070 were some of the best since they offered the 115W variants and ability to OC/UV with good heat dissipation. But you have to live with the potential weaknesses: hinges, keys, screen light bleed, and low battery life (51whr).
-----------------
Like all gaming laptops, there's going to be pros/cons and not one is perfect in price to performance/build quality - overheating issues eg. Dell G7 17.3" 300hz, but even that could be countered with undervolting bios modification underclocking the CPU/ overclocking the GPU, so it was ok for many buyers. $1100 RTX2060 GE75 was also really great, and that Gigabyte Aurus RTX 2060 for $930 may have been the lowest of all. Asus strix RTX 2070 super came once in the holidays for $1300...so maybe that deal will return in the next few months.).
-----------------
For 17.3" if you need it now, I would go with this MSI GE75 for better GPU/cooling/ and just take care not to slam the keys or close the screen frequently and very fast and hard.
----------------
Waiting for more deals: maybe a 17.3" RTX 3060 under $1300 by Asus, Dell, or MSI will come in the Fall/later in the year.

There is no such thing as "standard wattage" for 3000 series cards. 2000 series had MaxQ and "everything else" which narrowed it down a little.
----
3000 series cards have an optional feature whereby they can boost to a higher power level if the CPU demand is low. For instance the max on a 3060 is 115W-130W, where that extra 15W is the extra boost.

I already made a comparison earlier in this thread... and I'll add the 2070S

3060@60W= 94%
2060@115W= 100%
2070@115W= 110%
3060@115W= 115%
2070S@115W= 120%
Good information in this thread to compare RTX 2000/ 3000 GPUs. So the 2070S is the only 2000 gpu that rivals a full 3060.
I also found this site that compares GPUs with TDP power. But they left out the lower powered 60w and 80w RTX 3060. I'm guessing they could range to anything between a RTX 2060 90w and RTX 2070, depending on a specific game/resolution, & benchmarks.

Insightful and excellent information! Thanks!

1) I may avoid Gigabyte despite the price as I am concerned about its quality ( < MSI).
2) I will avoid Dell G7; I am in the market right now because of overheating on the existing OVERPOWERED brand laptop (has it 2 years) and don't want to mess around with settings.
3) I assume you have a high opinion of ASUS. What about Lenovo and HP Omen?
4) I booked marked the ASUS link you sent. It's 1,400 at Walmart and may bite if it gets to $1,300. However, I did not another Asus that's already at $1,300.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Asus-R...921522949?
In what way is the $1,400 you recommended better?
5. I noted your tips on the MSI is I go down that route.
6. I can wait until May, at the latest, but I assume I won't get an RTX 3060 17.3" for $1,300 or lower by then?

Thanks.
