I've been tracking the prices on R3/R7 forever, and it comes down to: "Do you consider arrows worth $125-150?" if you ignore the minor cosmetic differences.

To me, they weren't, and I bit on the R3 around $260 or so. I have had situations driving around where I'd like to know the direction of the KA alert, but I've gotten over it quickly. My car is a lightning blue cop magnet, so I just slow down on KA regardless.

To anyone buying this, chuck the user's manual and watch VortexRadar's 'R3 Configuration' video on YouTube on your phone in the car. 10m of setup and it's perfect.

Good deal on a great detector.
But wait...non-employee post? No auto-FP for you.
Please, citizens of SD let's get this on the FP!

It's not just arrows, they just released the firmware to include GPS auto lockouts.
As previously asked, new v1.35 firmware for R7 was recently released adding GPS auto lockout functionality and additional K band filters to quiet it down a bit from falses.

It auto mutes false alarms so you don't need to hit mute or program the lockout yourself. Worked great on my old escort
does this r3 have a feature to mute false alerts manually and permanently for certain areas?

All this effort to not get speeding tickets - and it's not even relatively foolproof.

It's like the cannonball run - race from NY to LA - those guys use radar of course (I mean, they're typically tricking out a car for max range anyway, what's another few hundred $$), BUT they also have spotters in the car with binoculars AND monitor police chatter/radio AND have people signed up along the route *just* waiting to "take one for the team" and intercept a cop pre-emptively (e.g. speed).

I mean, how fast are you all driving?
I don't have a radar detector and don't speed but I like the technology involved.

Excellent detector. I used this model for about 2 years before upgrading to the R7 (yes, I rally wanted arrows). Fantastic range, and I could tune out most false alerts for my area by disabling X- and K- band. This worked to filter out most proximity, adaptive cruise, etc. It paid for itself several times over.

I did get a ticket once on my first exposure to police rear-facing radar (detector alerted me, but I concluded it was a false alarm as there were no cars within a mile+ facing me. Couldn't possibly be a cop! ...Oops.).

On another occasion, I got pulled over late at night for 90+ in a 75 zone. On contact, the cop saw the detector and we had a short conversation about it - he had the same model radar detector! He apparently merged onto the highway behind me and paced me for a few minutes, no radar involved until the last moment. Got off with a warning after that chat, probably the most unusual non-ticket experience I've ever had.

It's a manual function, but yes. Press a button, it remembers the location and suppresses alerts there in the future. For some larger zones I had to set mute memory two or three times to fully suppress.

The GPS version does manual lock outs.

Yes it does but you have to do it manually as it does not do it on its own and not sure if it would ever do that with a firmware update.

My question is, and I'm NOT bashing the deal or these or anything, just purely curious - why is this price on a good detector still $200-400? I'd just imagine most of the components in these would go down in price as any commodity. Or do the few companies that make these want to recoup their costs via the Texas Instruments calculators that were invented 25 years ago but still charge $100 for it despite costing maybe $1.28 to make today?
Probably because the technology gets better. The range gets better, ability to detect multiple radar signals at the same time. GPS lock outs. Sort of like computers. The price doesn't come down drastically but now you get faster processor, more memory, etc

Any recommendations on a cordless radar detector? I can't use a corded one in my car.
I don;t know if they have any. Escort used to make one called Passport but as the batteries drained the range would decrease because the voltage to the amplifiers decreased which decreased the amplification. May not be an issue today with lithium batteries that maintain their full voltage until they die instead of losing voltage as soon as you start using them.

Forgive my ignorance...isn't much of the new police equipment near instant reads of speed...can these really protect you? I assume they just seek out those signals up and behind you on the road ? Again, total noob...just curious how safe these make you or if it's just a little insurance..
I also want to know how these detectors can save me from lasers ?

Yes much of radar is instant on instead of the old continuous type, which is why new detectors have and need much longer range. You have to rely on the detector being able to pick up the scattered radar signal from cars hit far ahead of you. If there are no cars ahead of you then will get caught.

With laser there is no scatter so if you have a detector that alerts to laser and you get an alert (that isn't false) you are already caught. The only option is a laser jammer.

They can't/don't. What you want/need is an ALP or similar system.

Short answer: they don't. They have a laser alert; if that sounds and you're being naughty, your only real play is to ease up and pull over, then be cooperative and polite with the nice man (or woman) in uniform who comes to talk to you.

Long answer: occasionally you can get an alert from a laser targeted at someone else's car - basically scatter. But mostly, see the short answer above.
