To me, they weren't, and I bit on the R3 around $260 or so. I have had situations driving around where I'd like to know the direction of the KA alert, but I've gotten over it quickly. My car is a lightning blue cop magnet, so I just slow down on KA regardless.
To anyone buying this, chuck the user's manual and watch VortexRadar's 'R3 Configuration' video on YouTube on your phone in the car. 10m of setup and it's perfect.
But wait...non-employee post? No auto-FP for you.
Please, citizens of SD let's get this on the FP!
As previously asked, new v1.35 firmware for R7 was recently released adding GPS auto lockout functionality and additional K band filters to quiet it down a bit from falses.

It's like the cannonball run - race from NY to LA - those guys use radar of course (I mean, they're typically tricking out a car for max range anyway, what's another few hundred $$), BUT they also have spotters in the car with binoculars AND monitor police chatter/radio AND have people signed up along the route *just* waiting to "take one for the team" and intercept a cop pre-emptively (e.g. speed).
I mean, how fast are you all driving?
I did get a ticket once on my first exposure to police rear-facing radar (detector alerted me, but I concluded it was a false alarm as there were no cars within a mile+ facing me. Couldn't possibly be a cop! ...Oops.).
On another occasion, I got pulled over late at night for 90+ in a 75 zone. On contact, the cop saw the detector and we had a short conversation about it - he had the same model radar detector! He apparently merged onto the highway behind me and paced me for a few minutes, no radar involved until the last moment. Got off with a warning after that chat, probably the most unusual non-ticket experience I've ever had.

With laser there is no scatter so if you have a detector that alerts to laser and you get an alert (that isn't false) you are already caught. The only option is a laser jammer.
Short answer: they don't. They have a laser alert; if that sounds and you're being naughty, your only real play is to ease up and pull over, then be cooperative and polite with the nice man (or woman) in uniform who comes to talk to you.
Long answer: occasionally you can get an alert from a laser targeted at someone else's car - basically scatter. But mostly, see the short answer above.
