I've been tracking the prices on R3/R7 forever, and it comes down to: "Do you consider arrows worth $125-150?" if you ignore the minor cosmetic differences.

To me, they weren't, and I bit on the R3 around $260 or so. I have had situations driving around where I'd like to know the direction of the KA alert, but I've gotten over it quickly. My car is a lightning blue cop magnet, so I just slow down on KA regardless.

To anyone buying this, chuck the user's manual and watch VortexRadar's 'R3 Configuration' video on YouTube on your phone in the car. 10m of setup and it's perfect.
Good deal on a great detector.
But wait...non-employee post? No auto-FP for you.
Please, citizens of SD let's get this on the FP!
It's not just arrows, they just released the firmware to include GPS auto lockouts.
As previously asked, new v1.35 firmware for R7 was recently released adding GPS auto lockout functionality and additional K band filters to quiet it down a bit from falses.

If you go over the speed limit, you risk getting a ticket, regardless of how many gadgets you have. That's part of the bargain. But you're allowed to use whatever tools are lawfully available to you, including radar/laser detectors, laser jammers, Waze/Google Maps, Ham radios, etc. You're also allowed to contest your ticket by any lawful means.

Uniden is a solid company that frequently updates their detectors. The R3 is the minimum detector I would run; the R7 is great too (for more money and a larger footprint). If your state allows it, get a laser jammer around your front plate area; anything is better than nothing but ALP is the best. You can get rear jammers too, but 99 times out of 100, police will shoot laser at your front plate.

Lastly, being knowledgeable about your roads and local police habits ranks high up in usefulness with good equipment. Cops have favorite spots to park, and favor certain types of equipment for each spot and for certain weather conditions. Also be very aware of the tell-tale signs of an unmarked police car. Most are your typical Ford police vehicles with no markings and discreet kit, but you'll get an occasional oddball thrown in there.

It seems a Radar Detector would only add to the level of delusion that reckless drivers already have

But as is human nature, everyone thinks they, personally, are the exceptionally good driver and would just use the RD as a 'tool'

That's fine. Just quit calling cops a-hats for doing their job (enforcing the law). It doesn't matter if you disagree with the speed limit. YOU are the a-hat for breaking it. Accept the consequence and quit blaming others.
Way too many real crimes to solve to justify cops writing traffic tickets in most cases.

Great product, great price!
I have 3 of these and have no complaints.
I haven't seen a compelling reason to buy anything more expensive than this one.

Because reckless driving doesn't kill innocent people?
So lets have no rules and no deterrents?

You don't get to pick what rules you think are good and which ones aren't.

If the world worked liked that, it would be a very crappy place.

Be happy you have first world complaints about speed limits.

Which version is that because I have the latest 1.33 and mine does not auto lockout yet
Its v1.35 but for some reason its not on their website. Check out Vortex Radar's site and his Youtube channel. He posted the link to the download and a video on youtube testing it out. The 2 new K filters have also quieted it down a bit from BLIS/ACC/Auto brake radars from other cars on the road too.

Forgive my ignorance...isn't much of the new police equipment near instant reads of speed...can these really protect you? I assume they just seek out those signals up and behind you on the road ? Again, total noob...just curious how safe these make you or if it's just a little insurance..
You'd be surprised. Here in NJ 95% of the time in local towns you're getting hit with radar. Its mostly just state troopers on major highways using Laser, and even then, their cars are usually equipped with both. Its easier(and sometimes safer) for them to use the radar instead. The other aspect that is very important to these devices is range. The bigger the range, the better. Because if theyre using instant on and clocking people in front of you, most likely it will pick up on that to alert you before you even get to them. The R3/R7's are notorious for their outstanding range. My R7 has picked up cops using Ka band from a mile out on twisty roads with trees in between. And theyre not even clocking me yet, its them aiming at the cars in front of me before I get there.

R3 owner. After following Vortex Radar set up (I use 50% on the 'K' band sensitivity, K POP off, QuietCruise or whatever under 25 mph, etc), I really only get falses when coasting very near some BSM systems. R7 currently has better BSM filtering, and I'd think that development is a selling point for the R7 over the R3. It's certainly safe to say that firmware releases have unreliable timing (the latest one was rumored for over a year before it happened), and that they'd prioritize the R7 in any case. If the release were out when I was buying, I'd have an R7.

That said, real world testing that I'm privy to (Vortex) had R3 and R7 close enough to where I couldn't justify it based on performance. GPS lockout is of questionable use, as R3 has plenty of 'mute memory' on anything you're driving by that often. The BSM falses and the arrows are, IMO, where the value is.
This is what got me to pull the trigger on this one. Thank you very much for the info. Was worried about still having to put up with the assistance signals but this is reassuring. I've been rocking an old Cobra for the past 15 years so it will certainly be better than that.

Yes, and I prefer the manual method. Auto lockout requires driving past the same spot for a few days before it thinks about kicking in for that spot. If you drive by the same spots anyway, you already know right away if it needs muted, so you simply double press mute and it's done now, saved in GPS, not a few days from now.

One thing that really surprised me with the R3 was how many red light cameras we have in our town. I knew we had a couple. R3 was going off at every light, about 10 lights in a row. A closer look and sure enough the city uses those newer cameras that look like they include speed detection devices for possible future use.

The arrows would be great. Driving along and is an alert detecting stationary, or mobile from behind or ahead? The range is so great that radar could be a cop driving 3/4 mile ahead or behind you, and it's going off the entire time for miles since we are all driving the same speed.

I've got a new Honda with all the lane watch and collision avoidance crap, like many cars on the road, and the new R3 updates, along with proper setup, virtually eliminate almost all false alerts. Can drive for days without a false alert in busy Tampa areas.
good feedback. thanks!

Waze is worthless. There is a less traveled road off a main road in my town where two or three motorcycle cops will sit on a side street and shoot radar. Not once has it been on Waze showing they are there.

You seem to be assuming that all radar signals are the same. That is not the case.
This is correct however radar detector manufacturers don't differentiate between radar signals which is why there are so many false alerts. Radenso's Theia detector will do that and will even be able to tell you the model of the radar gun used.
