To me, they weren't, and I bit on the R3 around $260 or so. I have had situations driving around where I'd like to know the direction of the KA alert, but I've gotten over it quickly. My car is a lightning blue cop magnet, so I just slow down on KA regardless.
To anyone buying this, chuck the user's manual and watch VortexRadar's 'R3 Configuration' video on YouTube on your phone in the car. 10m of setup and it's perfect.
But wait...non-employee post? No auto-FP for you.
Please, citizens of SD let's get this on the FP!
As previously asked, new v1.35 firmware for R7 was recently released adding GPS auto lockout functionality and additional K band filters to quiet it down a bit from falses.

Uniden is a solid company that frequently updates their detectors. The R3 is the minimum detector I would run; the R7 is great too (for more money and a larger footprint). If your state allows it, get a laser jammer around your front plate area; anything is better than nothing but ALP is the best. You can get rear jammers too, but 99 times out of 100, police will shoot laser at your front plate.
Lastly, being knowledgeable about your roads and local police habits ranks high up in usefulness with good equipment. Cops have favorite spots to park, and favor certain types of equipment for each spot and for certain weather conditions. Also be very aware of the tell-tale signs of an unmarked police car. Most are your typical Ford police vehicles with no markings and discreet kit, but you'll get an occasional oddball thrown in there.
But as is human nature, everyone thinks they, personally, are the exceptionally good driver and would just use the RD as a 'tool'
That's fine. Just quit calling cops a-hats for doing their job (enforcing the law). It doesn't matter if you disagree with the speed limit. YOU are the a-hat for breaking it. Accept the consequence and quit blaming others.
I have 3 of these and have no complaints.
I haven't seen a compelling reason to buy anything more expensive than this one.
So lets have no rules and no deterrents?
You don't get to pick what rules you think are good and which ones aren't.
If the world worked liked that, it would be a very crappy place.
Be happy you have first world complaints about speed limits.

That said, real world testing that I'm privy to (Vortex) had R3 and R7 close enough to where I couldn't justify it based on performance. GPS lockout is of questionable use, as R3 has plenty of 'mute memory' on anything you're driving by that often. The BSM falses and the arrows are, IMO, where the value is.
One thing that really surprised me with the R3 was how many red light cameras we have in our town. I knew we had a couple. R3 was going off at every light, about 10 lights in a row. A closer look and sure enough the city uses those newer cameras that look like they include speed detection devices for possible future use.
The arrows would be great. Driving along and is an alert detecting stationary, or mobile from behind or ahead? The range is so great that radar could be a cop driving 3/4 mile ahead or behind you, and it's going off the entire time for miles since we are all driving the same speed.
I've got a new Honda with all the lane watch and collision avoidance crap, like many cars on the road, and the new R3 updates, along with proper setup, virtually eliminate almost all false alerts. Can drive for days without a false alert in busy Tampa areas.
