To me, they weren't, and I bit on the R3 around $260 or so. I have had situations driving around where I'd like to know the direction of the KA alert, but I've gotten over it quickly. My car is a lightning blue cop magnet, so I just slow down on KA regardless.
To anyone buying this, chuck the user's manual and watch VortexRadar's 'R3 Configuration' video on YouTube on your phone in the car. 10m of setup and it's perfect.
But wait...non-employee post? No auto-FP for you.
Please, citizens of SD let's get this on the FP!
As previously asked, new v1.35 firmware for R7 was recently released adding GPS auto lockout functionality and additional K band filters to quiet it down a bit from falses.

It is a radar detector first and for most. It can detect laser but that's not what it's primarily advertised for and what this thread is about. Laser/Lidar is not a radar and hence this doesn't do 'hit for a laser other than notify you for an incoming ticket. As you mention, different treads require different counter measures. ALP is the best to deal with laser/lidar. R3 is very good at detecting radar. None of the counter measures are foolproof and/or perfect.
For all the naysayers and the don't speed posters, this is general risk management, not specific to speeding. Based on your assessment of risk you implement your risk management. Just remember that avoidance is not always, for that matter it rarely is, the best risk mitigation. So if you've chosen avoidance, aka not to speed, this thread is not for you. Period!
I saw the r7 3rd party amazon deal (the hair tie fiasco) and got it for $360+ tax.
I recently updated to the "beta" auto lockout firmware that was released on the forums and don't have any complaints. The r7 is very easy to use and understand since it has a screen and you can follow vortex radars guide. The old v1 was the most difficult to understand and use for me.
As for the r3, I have a couple friends with high powered cars that are running the r3 without any complaints. Get it if you're okay driving without the arrows.
It's like the cannonball run - race from NY to LA - those guys use radar of course (I mean, they're typically tricking out a car for max range anyway, what's another few hundred $$), BUT they also have spotters in the car with binoculars AND monitor police chatter/radio AND have people signed up along the route *just* waiting to "take one for the team" and intercept a cop pre-emptively (e.g. speed).
I mean, how fast are you all driving?
Thanks

That said, real world testing that I'm privy to (Vortex) had R3 and R7 close enough to where I couldn't justify it based on performance. GPS lockout is of questionable use, as R3 has plenty of 'mute memory' on anything you're driving by that often. The BSM falses and the arrows are, IMO, where the value is.

One thing that really surprised me with the R3 was how many red light cameras we have in our town. I knew we had a couple. R3 was going off at every light, about 10 lights in a row. A closer look and sure enough the city uses those newer cameras that look like they include speed detection devices for possible future use.
The arrows would be great. Driving along and is an alert detecting stationary, or mobile from behind or ahead? The range is so great that radar could be a cop driving 3/4 mile ahead or behind you, and it's going off the entire time for miles since we are all driving the same speed.
I've got a new Honda with all the lane watch and collision avoidance crap, like many cars on the road, and the new R3 updates, along with proper setup, virtually eliminate almost all false alerts. Can drive for days without a false alert in busy Tampa areas.
