I've been tracking the prices on R3/R7 forever, and it comes down to: "Do you consider arrows worth $125-150?" if you ignore the minor cosmetic differences.

To me, they weren't, and I bit on the R3 around $260 or so. I have had situations driving around where I'd like to know the direction of the KA alert, but I've gotten over it quickly. My car is a lightning blue cop magnet, so I just slow down on KA regardless.

To anyone buying this, chuck the user's manual and watch VortexRadar's 'R3 Configuration' video on YouTube on your phone in the car. 10m of setup and it's perfect.

Good deal on a great detector.
But wait...non-employee post? No auto-FP for you.
Please, citizens of SD let's get this on the FP!

It's not just arrows, they just released the firmware to include GPS auto lockouts.
As previously asked, new v1.35 firmware for R7 was recently released adding GPS auto lockout functionality and additional K band filters to quiet it down a bit from falses.

Waze is worthless. There is a less traveled road off a main road in my town where two or three motorcycle cops will sit on a side street and shoot radar. Not once has it been on Waze showing they are there.
I've been using Waze since beta and it didn't take long for me to see cops removing their locations (not there) or leaving chat comments (when you still could). They tend to relocate pretty quick now and can tell. I may be wrong but well established Waze accounts hold more water then newer ones too, it takes a handful of not theres to remove my markings.

How likely are you to get false alarms from this?

For that road, maybe it is worthless. That doesn't make Waze worthless. When it comes to the less-traveled roads, and in city driving, you should not expect Waze to help much if at all. I only turn it on when on the highway for more than a few minutes, or in somewhere I am not familiar with.

For highway, it is a very good tool. Saved me when they were using laser or instant-on, and I was just keeping pace with traffic. As I've already said before, it is just one of the tools you can use- none of which are foolproof.

There is a never harmful and usually helpful effect when you use the most tools you feel worthwhile, based on your risk aversion needs and budget.

This is correct however radar detector manufacturers don't differentiate between radar signals which is why there are so many false alerts. Radenso's Theia detector will do that and will even be able to tell you the model of the radar gun used.
That remains to be seen. Their demos are impressive, but the ones I've seen are where the guy with the radar gun is about 20 feet away from the detector. That's not real world where the "noise floor" will be much higher. Also, they've already suggested the price will be high - I'm guessing over $1000. If you care about money, this R3 is a better value.

Waze is worth $1.3 billion. At least that's what Google paid for it.

Just got out of a speeding ticket luckily.. was going 11 mph over. Thinking about buying a detector but I feel like cops look at these things and are less likely to give warnings because it's obvious we are speeders if we have one. Is that the case from people's experience here getting pulled over with a radar detector for speeding?

This is a pretty crappy detector so you get what you pay for since its really a low/midrange detector when compared to more expensive units from Escort and V1. The speaker broke during the first year of ownership and had to get it repaired via warranty which sucked b/c they wouldn't just ship a replacement so I had to go 2 weeks without a detector. The OLED display does suffer from burn in and it does not have a memory lockout function since apparently Escort owns the patent to that feature. After a year of use, I ended going back to Escort. They just work better for everyday use with the GPS tagging lockout of speeds signs and false signals. The peace and quiet is worth the extra $100-150 for something newer and better like a Max 3 or iXC. Don't waste your money on the Uniden.

I just take it down before he gets up to the car, I've only been pulled over once and it was 2 years ago i got nailed with a laser on the highway. He knew it, i knew it. But I still took it down before I came to a stop, I saw him pull out and immediately knew he was gonna nab me. If i would have had waze open, it would have alerted me. Oh well!

Doesn't this pick up on the lazer detector of the gun? And just to clarify is Lazer the thing they have on the back of their car so they can see how fast you're going without the gun pointed at you?

Very likely its the majority of the time that this detector is on that it will pickup stray radio signals. Its very annoying to live with b/c it falses a lot if you are living in a urban or suburban area

Radar detectors are only illegal in 2 states (VA and DC). As long as they are mounted correctly per state laws, there is nothing a cop can do if he pulls you over. For example, CA law does not allow it to be suction cupped to the windshield. There is an easy fix for that, get a BlendMount to mount it to your rear view mirror. Otherwise, mount it to your sun visor with a clip mount.

Yes, all modern detectors will notify you if you are being hit with Laser. But really, at that point, its too late and you should be prepared to pull over if you were speeding. Unless you are running a laser "jamming" device (its really a laser signal diffuser/scrambler), then you have no chance of avoid a ticket when they are shooting laser. Its instantaneous.

I think we know that it is not illegal our issue is re: judgment from cops as speeders

Well they can't give you a ticket for having it but if they already pulled you over for speeding, they're probably gonna give you a ticket anyways. Also depends on what kind of car you are driving, your appearance, how you carry yourself, how fast you were going for the conditions, etc. I've been pulled over for speeding even with the RD and was also let go as well. It all depends on how you handle yourself and the situation. The best way is to not get a ticket so either use a good RD and/or Jammer, or just drive slowly. This is not a good RD. Spend more for something better.
