What would be dumb is to sell something that is free with purchase and putting a value on the free item so it can be returned. Any major retailer has POS rules in place that prevent the free item from being returned without the original item be returned as well and i'd be hard pressed to find HD allowing this.
HD bundles them sometimes so individual items can't be returned, and sometimes they don't, so individual items can be returned. They've obviously chosen to be able to do both, and sometimes choose to do one, sometimes the other, based on whatever benefit they see internally.

They have come up with a very smart price discrimination strategy to maximize revenue for each target buyer.

Price sensitive dealseekers like us - gives us the pricing we demand and also the warm fuzzy feeling that we "hacked" a "very special" deal cause we are the ones in the know

Semi price sensitive contractors and general public - thrilled they got a "great deal" because of the free item, and often compares to MSRP or Amazon primarily

Non price sensitive people - will buy either way so its best to "hide" the deals a bit so they don't end up using them too much

Deal only applies to the tools listed in OP's attached Home Depot / DeWalt display image. Nothing more. Or look at what he typed out for reference. It also shows you what you end up paying after returning the battery. READ the deal posting.

Never knew they had a battery powered nailer. How does this one compare to using a nailer with air compressor? I have been borrowing one and it's a pain to drag the compressor.
I have the 21 degree framing nailer and have put 5-10k nails through it. Love it. If you're a true pro/ in the trade you probably want the air nailer but otherwise I think the electric is the way to go. I framed up my entire 2 story barn with it and was so happy to not have the compressor and hose etc. With the deal was in the 15 gauge but I'll still probably pick this one up to have it

Don't know where you've been, but these "hacks" have been happening for a while now. Lately its been for Milwaukee tools. I didn't know about them either, but after trying to return or cancel an item and still receive a discount on the primary item, man I was hooked. Sometimes I think HD plays dumb and could be the one hacking us, but while we figure that out, we can continue to score good deals....slick ones that is.

Yes, I was about to buy a cheapo router and this is perfect timing. I can wait a few more days for this deal to pop up. Hopefully my store will still have a kreg jig sitting around from the other deal

Is this an in store deal? None of my local stores have any finish nailer in stock... So unless this will be online deal this won't be available in my area (NYC)

They do this to compete with Menards. The list should line up with stores located within a reasonable distance to a Mendards. Menards runs 11% mail-in rebates on purchases pretty frequently.

but wouldn't they just say you can't return a free item unless you return all the bundle items for a full refund. that's what they should do so that you would have to get a store credit without a receipt.
You're asking a question for which we already know the answer and are trying to tell you.

No, they wouldn't and don't do that. They prorate the amount you pay across the retail values of the two items. So if you buy a $200 item and get a $100 item free, they will assign 133.33 to the $200 item and $66.66 to the "free" item, permitting you to return either item for their assigned value.

I know a lot of people speak of this as a loophole, but it's by design. HD knows some of these things are getting returned. They don't care. This is still better than a simple coupon or discount for them because getting you to take home an extra tool/battery is half the battle. Many people just keep the item they didn't really need.
