Don't know where you've been, but these "hacks" have been happening for a while now. Lately its been for Milwaukee tools. I didn't know about them either, but after trying to return or cancel an item and still receive a discount on the primary item, man I was hooked. Sometimes I think HD plays dumb and could be the one hacking us, but while we figure that out, we can continue to score good deals....slick ones that is.
lol, they absolutely are the ones hacking us. I think they could live with a straight discount. But if even a few people keep the tool or battery that they didn't need, then they do even better. These companies don't get caught up in a handful of slick dealers getting a good deal if the overall marketing strategy is working.

Yes, that's typically how it's done. A free item won't come across with a returnable value if they were smart. I'd be very surprised if they allowed this.

Also, this is why we can't have nice things...people who take advantage of already good deals.
SMH, people are telling you how it works and you are "surprised" because you think it doesn't.

HD is not being "tricked", they know what they are doing. It's a marketing gimmick. They know that getting you to take home an item you don't need is half the battle. If you return it, fine, they just gave you a discount. But lots of people just keep it, and now they upsold you.

Want to buy the multi-tool.

Can I use Makita 18V battery on this Dewalt? I just bought this one: Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Sub-Compact Brushless Cordless 2-piece Combo Kit (Driver-Drill/ Impact Driver) 2.0Ah
Or is it better to stay with same brand?

Don't let Jeff hear that lol.
Why would he have a problem with that? The receipt should show the return values of the battery and of the tool - return whatever you want.

Well, the atomic and XR are virtually identical. Same size, weight, etc. However, the motor in the atomic seems to be made from old cereal boxes lol. It burns out FAST!!!

Also, if patient, and diligent, its not uncommon to find the XR on sale <$100. And the XR is exceptional for the value.

All the atomics are a gimmick. No one understands why they exist other than to fool people.

Do some research on the XR vs atomic, and look into the atomics in general. The 12v Dewalts are MUCH better than their 20v atomic. I'm amazed they haven't been yanked off the shelves tbh.

Sadly, as a dewalt fan, they have made realllly bad choices the past few years. Their steps to evolve, in order to compete, have been (mostly) miserable failures. The only good things they did with their tools has been the 60v advantage lineup. The Atomic, and Bluetooth aspects, were just plain silly. And they reallllly pushed those way too hard.

Personally, I feel the Atomic tools would not exist if the Covid lockdowns were never a thing. Many people took to doing repairs around their home, and ended up buying into the Atomic series based on name alone.

So I highly recommend the XR oscillating tool. I'd rather use a Harbor freight oscillating tool over the Atomic line.

Head over to YouTube and search "dewalt atomic vs XR oscillating". But beware... if you watch any of the VCG videos, skip the first 90% of the video as it will just be repetitive babbling lol.
Are you sure it's a line-wide issue and not just a bad tool? I've been using the atomic one-handed recip and it's been solid.

Try to stay with Makita or return the Makita and get the entire kit in DeWalt. Always better to stay on one brand bc batteries are interchangeable. Unless, you want multiple batteries of different brands sitting around. I just started building my own kit a few months ago (was using my dad's old) and decided to research brands Stuck with DeWalt so I am planning to get only DeWalt tools.

Thank you both!
For occasionally weekend project, I think I just need drill/driver and multi-tool, and possible flashlight. I have seen various combo but didn't find such exact combo. Do you have any recommendation deal?

I totally agree with you. However sometimes you just have to get different brand for specific tools you need. I have entire Ryobi line, but I have to get the DeWalt cordless sander because the Ryobi sander is just too weak.

Just go with Dewalt or Milwaukee. Even though your needs profile doesn't necessary indicate that right now, you never know and you don't want to have to switch in the future because the lower end brands are either not cutting it or don't have the full array of tools.

Agree, stick with a primary platform. However, you can get adapters for most every battery/tool combination. My platform is Makita, but I don't have any loyalty issues if another brand has a better/different/cheaper version of a tool.
