I don't get all the comments about it being expensive...

Yes it's $100, but any PS5, XBOX. Or DS game is $50 or $60+

This game is very involved, changes as you play, and it's meant for people to come together and play, not for 1 person. So if you and a friend play a PS5 game online you both have to pay $60. This is $50 each.

Plus this works when the power and internet go out...

It's a great game! Long setup and very involved, but if you can setup and leave it out, it is great to play each weekend. Missions take anywhere from an hour to three!

Find a few plano boxes and keep storage neat!

Also check out any videos online for tutorials. The directions can be cumbersome!

Does this come with a card that blocks attacks from a Level 99 angry wife?

Haha, I bought it awhile ago thinking I could play it with the family.... don't get it -1. It's super flimsy cardboard cutouts that end up having rough edges and you have spend hours popping them outta the cardboard 2. It's WAY too complicated, my wife and kids can barely understand monopoly
You could say the same thing about pretty much any board game. This sounds like you have a family who doesn't like board games much and bought them one of the more complicated games on the market.

You don't buy a tricycle to drive the whole family out for ice cream

Not in Florida. Game nights and other gatherings still happen here, because we have a governor who treats us like adults who can behave responsibly.
Which is ironic cause Floridians are the furthest thing from responsible adults.

How much room do I need to keep a game running for weeks?
A decent size card table, for sure. I highly recommend looking at some sort of storage recommendation for the pieces. Board Game Geek has suggestions using Plano boxes which greatly reduces the setup/teardown time as well as keeping everything secure.

"adults who can behave responsibly [during a pandemic]"

"Game nights and other gatherings still happen here [during a pandemic]"

Choose one. Because those are conflicting statements.

My coworker is a board game designer - and he's tried to have me join his game nights back when we both lived in the same town, but man, I just never developed the spark for finding something like this interesting. More power to those of you who it does, but I can't imagine playing something like this for months with complicated rules. Sounds like Hell to me.

I played through this over several months with friends. About half way through we switched from manual setup and tracking to using the Gloomhaven Helper app. It streamlined everything and allowed us to focus less on minutiae and more on the strategy. Made the game a lot more fun.

Would recommend starting with the app if you're starting a new game. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your view it eliminates a large portion of the cardboard you need to keep track of.

Where to start? You're comparing retail video game prices to a slick deal price on this.... I doubt this game will get much cheaper, and I just bought 3 games for less than $40 (gift card credit earned from Microsoft rewards because I'm slick). They are playable with or without friends, which I'm low on. Playing online allows you to meet and play with people all around the world instead of our typical, limited network of friends. Another thought on the expensive comments is the level of technology put into the two. Cardboard and plastic aren't the most expensive materials. I know a disc isn't either, but the amount of time, money, and manpower that goes into making a modern video game is up there!
  1. This is one of the most popular, if not the most popular board game within the board game community. So it would be appropriate to compare it to video games that almost never go on sale, and when they do, they only dip down 10-20%. The point that only one person needs to buy the board game is easy to overlook, so calculate the cost of the board game divided by the number of players.
  2. This game, and an increasing number of others, are specifically designed to play alone or with a group. Playing remotely is certainly challenging for physical games, but there are also digital versions of these board games available online, allowing folks to play with all of their friends in other locations.
  3. Without getting into the costs to design, develop, market, etc... the costs to produce and ship the actual physical board games are much higher than the costs for producing and shipping video games. I'm sure the margins of video games are much higher than board games at the moment, which is what allows video games to get such deep discounts.
  4. How many hours does one play a video game? Some games run only a few hours while some are measured in the hundreds of hours. Board games offer similar longevity, which may not be obvious at first glance.

Yes, $100 sounds like A LOT of money for a board game, and it is, but I think the point is if one were to analyze how much enjoyment and value they get out of a board game, it's at least on par with other forms of entertainment including video games, movies, etc.

Agreed. Not sure why people are min-maxing their "entertainment hours" by comparing different mediums. Putting aside that Gloomhaven has like 100-200 hours of content (depending on how quickly you play) making it incredibly cheap per hour, I wouldn't tell people to not buy a gift card for a driving range or go kart track because their per hour entertainment dollar isn't going as far.

The only game I would spend that much on is Cones of Dunshire.

It requires a certain level of dedication, for sure. I would suggest building up to that point if you're interested in getting into the hobby. Games like Pandemic or Horrified are fairly simple and help to explain the mechanics of cooperative games to starters. From there you can jump to a slightly more complex game like Munchkin or Zombicide to get a better understanding of dungeon crawlers and hand management. Then graduate to more advanced games like Mansions of Madness or Dead of Winter to combine together a lot of the mechanics learned in the previous games. By that point, Gloomhaven should no longer look as intimidating. But if it still does, there's always Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion to ease you into the mechanics of Gloomhaven.
