I don't get all the comments about it being expensive...

Yes it's $100, but any PS5, XBOX. Or DS game is $50 or $60+

This game is very involved, changes as you play, and it's meant for people to come together and play, not for 1 person. So if you and a friend play a PS5 game online you both have to pay $60. This is $50 each.

Plus this works when the power and internet go out...

It's a great game! Long setup and very involved, but if you can setup and leave it out, it is great to play each weekend. Missions take anywhere from an hour to three!

Find a few plano boxes and keep storage neat!

Also check out any videos online for tutorials. The directions can be cumbersome!

My coworker is a board game designer - and he's tried to have me join his game nights back when we both lived in the same town, but man, I just never developed the spark for finding something like this interesting. More power to those of you who it does, but I can't imagine playing something like this for months with complicated rules. Sounds like Hell to me.

I played through this over several months with friends. About half way through we switched from manual setup and tracking to using the Gloomhaven Helper app. It streamlined everything and allowed us to focus less on minutiae and more on the strategy. Made the game a lot more fun.


Would recommend starting with the app if you're starting a new game. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your view it eliminates a large portion of the cardboard you need to keep track of.

Agreed. Not sure why people are min-maxing their "entertainment hours" by comparing different mediums. Putting aside that Gloomhaven has like 100-200 hours of content (depending on how quickly you play) making it incredibly cheap per hour, I wouldn't tell people to not buy a gift card for a driving range or go kart track because their per hour entertainment dollar isn't going as far.

It requires a certain level of dedication, for sure. I would suggest building up to that point if you're interested in getting into the hobby. Games like Pandemic or Horrified are fairly simple and help to explain the mechanics of cooperative games to starters. From there you can jump to a slightly more complex game like Munchkin or Zombicide to get a better understanding of dungeon crawlers and hand management. Then graduate to more advanced games like Mansions of Madness or Dead of Winter to combine together a lot of the mechanics learned in the previous games. By that point, Gloomhaven should no longer look as intimidating. But if it still does, there's always Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion to ease you into the mechanics of Gloomhaven.
