It is quite easy. I use credit cards for absolutely everything and so 1 to 2,000 a month is pretty basic. Even my utilities go on my credit card. Some municipals don't do that but in my city I can.
You can advance pay your gas, electric, phone etc. I have cut down my income tax withholding to bare minimum and use credit cards to pay estimated taxes every quarter.
You're eligible for a new Sapphire bonus 48 months after you got your last sapphire bonus.
When you opened or closed the card is irrelevant (other than you can't have one CURRENTLY open when you apply again)
My application was approved 3/30. I was charged the $95 fee on 4/1.
I'm sitting on 300k points with the expectation of opening a sapphire reserve when my 48 months expire (it may have expired already bc I got in on the last month of the 100k points - was that Jan 2017?) and getting the 1.5x on travel.
It sounds like I may be better off taking the cash at 1x and not risking a points devaluation.
The Sapphire Reserve is the one that has a 50% bonus. But that bonus is only worth $600 x 1.5 = $900. And again, that's only if redeemed for travel or using Pay Yourself Back, which is scheduled to stop at the end of April.

They said I could close this card & apply for Chase Sapphire Preferred in one month. Would closing the card which is open since 2005 affect my credit history. Any advice?

Presumably, if you maintain your flock of credit cards, then their combined age history will improve before the loss of the single credit card has a significant effect on your credit score.
If you're in the habit of constantly closing out credit cards, then I assume that you're aware of how such a practice impacts credit scores. It reduces total credit limit, which directly impacts percentage of credit usage. It also leads to relative young credit history.
I've closed four or five accounts at one time with very little impact on my 800+ credit score. But that was back when I carried 40 to 50 credit cards. Currently, I carry only 30 credit cards.

The first 2 customer service reps kept insisting that the information is not available on their system (has been purged out) since I had closed in the card in 2018 and give some ridiculous fax number to request this information. I asked to speak to a Supervisor who was able to access the information and confirm the dates. I guess, if anyone needs this information and gets turned down - dont give up.
