TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)
Hope this helps

I plan on grabbing the line first and within the next 72/96hh or so to make up my mind what/if phone promo to use but do that before the end of the Weekend.
Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it. I think this is exactly what I am going to do as well.
I wonder if we switch what we'd pay under T-Mobile.

i am a current tmo customer who has 5 lines (all paid) and my SOC is TM1T12
if i add a new line, its automatically free with the same plan as the other lines (T Mobile One)?
After 2 hours, I was able to get a free iphone se with the free aal and i ported in a number from google fi. My daughter will be 16 in a week and although she doesn't prefer red (the other colors are back ordered) I think she will be happy to have a working phone again. I am ELATED that I didn't end up spending a dime to make it happen, so if she breaks this one, I am not out anything but my time.
I've been a t-mobile customer for about 5 years now and took advantage of 2 of the free lines last year, but have not gotten any phones with it. So thanks again EVERYONE who contributed useful info to this thread!!
As for college students and people with student loans, the current media and politicians have spent plenty of time making them out to be victims. They paint them as helpless young adults who have huge debt that needs to be forgiven. I've always thought college kids are "supposed" to be smart, have the ability to be fiscally responsible, make good decisions about where they go to school, and select professions that allow them to manage their debt. Unfortunately, many students are going to school for the "experience", and going to expensive out of state schools, and/or traveling while in school, and taking more than 4 years to get a degree. The next time you read a news story about some unfortunate person with a huge debt, ask yourself why the author doesn't ask these tough questions; Did you go to school out of state, or pick one with tuition you could afford? Did you work while in college? Did you research and pick a profession which the economy needed? How long did it take for you to get a "4 year" degree? Unfortunately, these questions never get asked, because it wouldn't fit the narrative of the person being the victim. People need to take responsibility for their decisions....
Maybe those who "deserve" a promotion should be those who rose up from meager childhoods, went to an inexpensive local state school (or joined the militaries), finished school in 4 years with a highly sought after degree (or learned a trade), joined the workforce, and paid off all debt while raising a family. Maybe those people should be rewarded for once. Unfortunately, that is rarely the case, because they are capable of creating their own reward system.
As you can see, determining who "deserves" can be contentious. Personally, It's nice to see companies like T-Mobile offer discounts for Military & 55+. As for everyone else, it looks like the government is well underway of making sure people in all kinds of age groups get free money....
