TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)

I was also on Magenta Amplified with 9 paid lines and was able to add a line thru chat 3 different times throughout last year. However, my bill also increased every time and the promo could never stick. I think they were able to fix my account for the first free line but the other 2 free lines were showing up on my bill every month and I had to contact them to fix manually. I ended up having to switch my account from Magenta Amplified to just Magenta because they said technically, the Amplified plan didn't qualify for the promo. Just an fyi

I tried Number Barn but their numbers are held by Bandwidth.com who is the same VoIP provider that Google Voice uses.
Google Voice ports will work, but they are not allowed for the promotions to get a free iPhone SE or iPhone 12 (w/trade in).
Most of the vendors I tried on eBay are not working. I tried a sketchy looking company (portnumbers.co) that used PayPal - to buy an AT&T number to port for $15, but haven't heard back from them yet (only been an hour).
If you have a number you're willing to sell for a reasonable price, PM me.
