TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)

2) I want to do the iPhone trade in promo. Will that automagically recognize the new line I've added to trigger the promo? Answer: If you choose to do it online yourself, you will add the device to that free line. Otherwise, a rep will do it for you if assisted.
3) I know I also need to port in a number to et that promo. Can I do steps 1, 2, and 3 in any order? Or is there a specific sequence to trigger the appropriate promos? Answer: You can port in at the time of adding the free line, or later when you get your device and sim.
4) A few pages back there was discussion of a $150 promo, maybe through Costco? What was that, and is it still available? Answer: Not sure, but it may have been Costco BYOD cash card promo that was worth $300 last week. Basically you receive a Costco cash card via rebate in 14 weeks by opening a new line and bringing your own device to that line. Some people try to stack their BYOD line they activated at Costco with a new device promo from T-mobile. Be careful, make sure it is permitted per the fine print for adding the free BYOD line and then upgrading it with a new device from T-mobile, or you risk losing the $150 Costco cash card rebate.
5) The number I was going to port was from the Moxee free hotspot I got last month from AT&T. Think that'll work? Answer: I have no idea, I am not familiar with Moxee. Be aware however that the port in number has to be from a voice line, if that helps.
I would advise doing a chat with T-force via FB or Twitter. They can do all of the above plus answer questions specific to your account. Plus you will have a written record of everything. Ask them to waive any assist and sim fees if they do not offer first. They are usually glad to do it, especially if doing a device promo on EIP.

iPhone-8 falls in the top tier ($830 trade-in value) so you can buy used one for cheap on ebay or whatever and trade it in.
I am trading in my daughter's old iPhone-6 which has only $380 trade-in value but this is probably my last chance to trade-in iPhone-6 so I want to get rid of it ASAP...LOL
costco iphone SE for half the price and $100 GC is a good deal too however i hate costco lines and moron reps. they are terrible at screwing up free line as well..
So I'm wondering if I could get a AT&T or Verizon number and port it in and still get phone credits?

For a promo like $100 BYOD I might risk trying a GV port, for something like the $830 trade-in combo I would rather use a real ATT/Verizon number.
It seems to me that grabbing a Freedompop SIM from Target etc. and activating an ATT or Verizon number and then porting it may be the safest route, but potentially too slow. I ill grab a SIM and activate one for the next event in a few months "jut in case".
T-Mo is basically paying you extra for "leaving" ATT or Verizon, not because they love you... ;-)

So say you have $400 balance due on the agreement. You will need to pay all $400 at once. That frees up the device for trade. You will still receive the monthly credits on your account same as usual for the remainder of the original agreement.
