TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)

Costco doesn't use the IMEI to validate. They need a place filler in their own system to complete the order on BYOD transactions. Most Costco reps will ask for an IMEI to be presented because of this. If you get a really good Kiosk rep, he will know how to put in a dummy IMEI. . .meaning they don't use it for anything further.
Leave the byod phone and sim from Costco in place for at least a month or until rebate is processed.

8 series went to lower tier losing $230 in value. This is what I was afraid of. It could get better in the next promos, but not guaranteed. 6 series got dropped but 6S series got bumped in value.
I agree, I could send my iPhone-7 or iPhone-8 for better trade-in value but those will bump up again in trade-in tier like last year and what will I do with iPhone-6 in that case? LOL
As xtrabad said above, your chances of fetching max value for 7 and 8 are running out and unsure if it would still fetch similar later this year. Even if you are to sell iPhone 6 and 7 now for $150-200 combined, you will be saving around $600-650 ($450 for iPhone 12 + 6/7 sale) by giving away your 8, rather than taking a chance with 7 / 8 in the future.
Trading-in 7 is bad deal since it will maintain it's tier for a while.
iphone-8 is (actually WAS) in the 830 tier and iPhone-6 was in the 380 tier !

You are passing up an extra $450 just because you want to dump an old iPhone 6.
You can throw the iPhone 6 in a lake and still come out ahead by trading in the 8.
If you cannot sell the 6, use it as a remote or iPod. Or use it as a backup phone you take to the beach or boating, or any place where it might be trashed or stolen. Or leave it in the car for emergency use, or as a decoy for thieves to steal.

I'm not sure why some people brought up there will be a new iPhone promo coming. They must not know it that won't apply to this free line like I wasn't.
