TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)

One thing to note - if you open line first and then port a few days later, T-Mo prorates charges for the previous number. In my case it was only $0.66. Also, that line shows up as canceled. This caused an issue last week because we had a number change on the free line last December and the store rep thought I had canceled lines in the past 90 days. The system also showed that I had a canceled line in the recent past.
But, it got sorted out after she reviewed the history. So, heads up for anyone doing this for future promos.
1. Does a screen replacement affect the value or eligibility of a Trade-In? I have an iPhone XS Max, on which the original display just stopped responding after 2.5 years. So, I had to have the screen replaced at a reputed local Mobile Phone (Non-Apple) repair shop. The screen has been working perfectly fine for the last year, but it's still an aftermarket display.
2. Can the Trade-In device be verified and be completed at a T-Mobile store, if the New device purchase device was done online through their Rep? I have heard on this forum that if the Trade-In is completed at a T-Mobile store, then they check it out right away and assure the final value of the Trade-In that will get applied.
Any response from past experience of the other users on this forum would be very appreciated.
2. As you ordered phone online, you are not eligible to trade-in in the store. If you are purchasing from store, then you can trade-in at the same time.

Now it's considered a mid cycle change..and my plan charge was -$4.00 ...as in negative $4 bucks...lol
And that has nothing to do with negative eip....
I guess, in a way, that makes me creditor to Tmobile...maybe I should run a credit check on them.🤣
I'm never leaving....in fact, I should probably update my will, leaving this plan to one of my beneficiaries seeing how it kinda became an asset. 🤣

I also ALWAYS put the same IMEI I gave to Costco while the online application and even I have NEVER used the same IMEI device with the actual line/sim card...lol
And I have received it every single time !
so before sending in my iPhone-8 as the trade-in device, I just want to confirm for the last time...lol
I have a old iPhone-6 32GB (locked to Tracfone which they refused to unlock since I never used it). Since Apple stopped pushing new iOS to iPhone-6, it stays at iOS 12.5 hence the RSIM unlock no more works (RSIM needs the latest iOS)! If I trade-in this, I'll get $380 credit over 24 months or so. Most probably I'll never get another chance to trade-in iPhone-6 !
I also have a old iPhone-8 64GB (locked to AT&T). Since the iOS is up to date, the RSIM unlock still works (and is working right now). If I trade-in this device, I'll get $830 credit over 24 months or so.
So, do you guys still think it's a better deal to send in iPhone-8 for $830 credit (instead of iPhone-6 for $380 credit) and let iPhone-6 sit at home as a wifi-only device? (Well, there is a slim chance of iPhone-6 showing up in a trade-in deal again but let's assume it will stay and die in my hands as a WiFi device as the worst case scenario...lol)!!!

RSIM had stopped working from mid 2019 until early 2020 but started working again in March-2020 or so. Since then it's been working until now. Not sure about the new/recent activation though !
