I fish, but I'm not a serious fisherman. I hike but I'm not a serious backpacker. And I tinker around the house but I'm not a serious woodworker or mechanic.

So when I see deals for products for them I don't fully understand, I keep my mouth shut.

If you do long rides, your phone isn't going to last, simple as that.

Had the same question every time I see the Varia come up here and finally broke down and bought this morning. Did some research on bike forums and viewed youtube vids beforehand, and didn't find a single owner who regretted their purchase.
Even at this price, if you're considering the Varia, get the one with the tail light. You need a tail light anyway, you don't need to find places to mount two things, and the Varia with the tail light gives feedback to motorists! I don't know if it really changes their behavior as reported by some cyclists, but it certainly makes you more seen and at least gives them the chance to know the bike is reacting to them.

But in terms of road awareness, it's incredible. Never a complete substitute to checking over your shoulder for yourself, but it is invaluable for picking up the slack when you get lazy or just can't look behind you - like when you're going fast downhill, the wind is in your ears, you can't take you're eyes off the crappy road, but if you need to swerve left (because of the crappy road) you need to know if there's a car. Also great when a long flat road lulls you into a sense that you're alone.

Since I've gotten it (only 3 months) I've never been surprised by a car.

I just went without because already have a 200lm taillight that is alot more powerful in daylight and can mount low, I plan to get a seatrail mount so the 315 is tucked under the back of seat.. theres no deals really on the rtl515 so was $90 difference for me..

I recently purchased 2 x Cygolite 350 lumen tail lights that I put on one/both seat stays (depending on street traffic) so gonna pass on the tail light version as I believe that is less than 75 lumens. It's not gonna look as cool or be as light though!

Yeah I found that the 510/515 only is 25lm night/65lm day flash. So those cyglolights are legit! For front I already had a 850lm cyglolight for actual night riding but just picked up a cyglolight 150 Dice for road bike day rides, it's micro sized but crazy bright and puts out 200lm in day flash. I stick with cyglolight because their lenses/reflectors are superior IMO to other and has better beam spread..

Not worth it. Get a Garmin 745, where you can use for bike, run, walk, swim, etc
I've got a 645 music, but feel like it's too much of a hassle to lift my hand off the handlebar and figure out ride details on my watch. Considering this.

When you're running though I think totally fine to keep on trucking and check your watch.

I have Garmin vivoactive 3 watch and I used Garmin connect app with it.
Why do I need the GPS, when it does the same thing my VA3 watch does?

I can't seem to find a solid answer online. Will the Edge 130 Plus pair with a Apple Watch with cellular? I'd like to ride with my watch paired with the Edge so that I can leave my phone at home.

How is this in places like nyc? I would imagine it being pretty annoying with constant alerts?

That's an awesome feature but I didn't see it mentioned in the DC Rainmaker review. I found the details in the online manual but kind of bummed that they didn't make a setting to leave the light off until a car is detected in order to save battery life. It basically just goes from solid light > flashing light if in a solid light mode or from flashing > flashing fast if in a flashing mode.
I've done several 6+ hour rides and have never had the battery die on me. I do use the flashing mode instead of solid mode.

I agree the feature would have been nice, but it's also not going to hamper battery life unless you're doing some crazy 12hr endurance ride.

You can disable audio alerts. But it would be quite annoying. I find it a little annoying riding through the suburbs on the way to the country roads.

Honestly, I find the value the most on the quieter, country roads where traffic is infrequent. It let's me know pretty far ahead when there is a car approaching from behind to let me ensure I'm far over or off to the side, etc and to help not get startled when a car zooms by at 50mph and it's the first one you've had pass you in half an hour.

For city riding, I'd be more skeptical of the value here. The tail light is solid, and super high quality. But you can get super great tail lights for a fraction of this cost to do same thing.

It would suck in NYC. It's very sensitive and alerts any time a vehicle exceeds your speed. It will also pick up cyclists in your group if they're going much faster than you (mine goes off constantly on descents when the group spreads out). When riding in heavy traffic it's just constant alerts.

Thats why they made the 130+.
They did....but they actually lowered it with the 130+ model, not kidding:

"Notably, battery life on the Edge 130 Plus is listed at 12 hours to the Edge 130's 'up to 15 hours"

Agreed. Reviews are clear on this and so is Garmin with the battery life on the 130+.

The comment on the 130 battery life is irrelevant in this thread.
They actually decreased the battery life on the 130+ model, not increased.

Probably relevant, because it's even worse.

Reviews that I've read have said they get about the same battery life. 10-12hrs
