If my taxes are 5K Federal and 3K CA, is that how much I'll be getting?
Do your own math:
$34000 OTD (including TTL -- some people here have gotten it down to $33000)
- 8000 (federal tax credit)
- 4500 (CA rebate)
---------------------------
$21500
-7500 (15k H2 fuel card is only worth about this much fuel equivalent)
---------------------------
$14000
What comparable new 2021 ICE or hybrid or PHEV can you buy for $14000 ? Even if you buy used, then probably not getting the same tech, same comfort, same safety, same warranty, same maintenance, etc. The Mirai comes with:
3yr/35k warranty
8yr/100k FCEV warranty
10yr/150k hybrid battery warranty
21d of loaner car within 3 yrs for those longer trips
Plus, if you read the FB page, you will see that Toyota in the past has given out complimentary rentals for when the H2 pumps are offline or H2 stations have no H2.
What if I have owed and already paid $20k in taxes from my paycheck. When I file my taxes I will get a $8k refund, correct? Or do I need to tell my employer not to take any taxes out so I owe $8k so I can get the credit?

Too bad that I am semi-retired with enough cash but not making enough for the tax credit, otherwise I would have bought one already.
1) $15K Hydrogen fuel card is good for 3 years for lease and 6 years for purchase.
2) Hydrogen fuel is currently more expensive than gas and way more than electric. Currently it's around $75-$100 for a full tank for the 400miles range. The idea and hope is that it will be more prevalent and cheaper over time BUT don't hope or buy this car on this wish.
3) The depreciation on the FCEV are the worst of any car you can buy so don't buy this car, or any FCEV, thinking you will recoup any real money if you intend to purchase the Mirai, like I did. Purchase this Lexus luxury caliber and quality car because it is a phenomenal deal for around a $7-$10K (give or take depending on your driving habits) after all the perks over six years. Yes, I think this car would easily last this long as it is a Toyota.
4) Make sure you have at least two+ hydrogen fueling stations conveniently located near your home or place of work. If not AVOID this car like Covid-19!!! Refueling is a huge compromise.
5) Do NOT consider this car unless you have access to a second car. Hydrogen fueling stations aren't ready for prime time, possibly never will be. I would think this applies to pure BEVs as well. I don't know too many people that only have a BEV as it too isn't ready for prime time but definitely will be. You will regret trying to having a only a FCEV, or even possibly BEV, as your only one vehicle. PHEV us the best for a single car scenario but BEV is more doable than FCEV. FCEV, no, just no.
I have friend that states he did the math on new car deprecation at $4K over 3 years. If you keep this Mirai over 6 years, this would mean about at least $8K+. Therefore, if you drive and take full advantage of the $15K fuel card then then $7-$10K cost over 6 years would be about how much a typical car depreciates. Please don't take this as fact but mere information that you would have to calculate and make sure it reflects your situation.
Overall, this 2021 Mirai is an fine piece of technology and luxury if it works for your specific situation.

I also live with four stations within 10 miles in all four directions so I can fill up anytime I go any direction. Hopefully the station on Ventura in Sherman Oaks opens soon since that's only 2 miles away.
Mentally, I think of it as a $15k car when it's all said and done (counting fuel card as worth about $7,500). If the car has any value at the end of 6 years, that will be a bonus.
$15k to go 50,000 miles of 6 years works out to 30 cents a mile (that's even assuming the car is worth nothing at the end). That's very good value.
