  • Few books transform a generation and then establish themselves as touchstones for the generations that follow. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is one such book. This modern epic of a man's search for meaning became an instant bestseller on publication in 1974, acclaimed as one of the most exciting books in the history of American letters. It continues to inspire millions.
  • A narration of a summer motorcycle trip undertaken by a father and his son, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance becomes a personal and philosophical odyssey into fundamental questions on how to live. The narrator's relationship with his son leads to a powerful self-reckoning; the craft of motorcycle maintenance leads to an austerely beautiful process for reconciling science, religion, and humanism. Resonant with the confusions of existence, this classic is a touching and transcendent book of life.
  • This new edition contains an interview with Pirsig and letters and documents detailing how this extraordinary book came to be.

I think I'm the only person on the planet who hated this book. Loved the title, thought the book was really overrated.
Lol, no, that's a common misconception. This book is about the Cronus Zen gaming controller adapter.
I'm with you. I was into it at first, but then I thought it kind of went up its own butt, so to speak, and started obsessing over trivialities.

I always think of this book when somebody (wife) tells me to follow the assembly instructions when putting something together. If you follow the instructions, it is a chore. If you don't follow the instructions, it is art. (read the book to understand)

I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it overall and couldn't get through it. It really caught my attention at the beginning, but it lost me about half-way though.

Same. I enjoyed the writing and storytelling, but boy does the middle drag out.

This book is a very worthwhile investment of a few hours. At $1.99 - it is cheaper than a cone of ice cream or a parking slot.

If you spend time reading this book, I guarantee that you would learn something to make your life better.

I own this book in hardcover but at this price bought additional ebooks for friends and family.
why do people have to drag ice cream into this....??

Neighbor just gave me his dog-eared copy last week! Otherwise I'd have purchased. Good deal, OP.

Thanks OP for a deal on a book.

That said, I read this book as a working guide by, of and for narcissists. It was an eye opening moment when it is revealed that Chris (the author's son) has basically missed the trip by only seeing the back of his father's jacket. How selfishly disconnected from reality must you be to be so indifferent to those around you to never have said something like, "Hey Chris, how's that view of the mountains?" The author seems to make no connection between an incredibly dull, immobile 17 days for the kid and his acting up.

This commentary sums it up pretty well: https://www.amazon.com/review/R2H14MT7KCC3FZ

And don't get me started on that "Atlas Shrugged" drivel.
Well, that was part of the point of the book/story. That his obsession with Quality as a tyrannical teacher / person led to he and his son being separated by a glass (door) both in reality and metaphorically. The book is about a high-functioning insanely smart person (pun intended) living in a "regular world." Just trying to make his way and figure things out - like the rest of us.

but anyways....this is a slickdeals forum

A few decades back, my son asked me to buy this for him, when he was in h.s., so I bought one for me, as well. It was his first step into philosophy. I found the book enjoyable.

Putting the narcissism of Zen atAoMM in the same colosseum as Ayn fricking Rand is absolute insanity.

This book is philosophy for the masses. Easy to chew, quick to digest. Enjoyable enough and if you work in tech you might as well read it because it will be namedropped, eventually.

That may have been a similar book:

Oddly, also a book on philosophy, but with real attention towards diagnosing and repair, which can be transferred to other areas of life.

And it will save you a lot of money - in the time you spend reading (and re-reading) it, you won't be spending money on anything else. And if you get the message, it may help you beyond that.
