As someone else posted, this is a great way to get into the Makita ecosystem. It's worth it for the batteries alone.

I'm a little hesitant to invest heavily into the 36V line (despite having the circular saw, miter saw, blower) because the release of the 40V single battery is on the horizon, but I have dozens of 18V tools so at least the 18V batteries are compatible between 18V and 36V.

And while this is an exceptional value, do some research before buying if you're only planning on reselling. I know posters on SD would resell toilet paper if they could make a dime a roll (no one seems to value their time) but this is the third time Makita has done this promotion since last summer and I am constantly seeing the circular saws, dual chargers, and 5.0 batteries (loose, and in double pack) flooded all over the various marketplaces at prices that almost don't make it worth the effort to part out if you don't intend to keep something out of need. Just an FYI

You would get $95 (or whatever it was) back. Ship one to you or do store pickup, then set the batteries to store pickup in another store. Don't pick them up and they will get restocked after 7 days and your money will get refunded.

For basic cross cuts and rips which handle is better?
Get the top handle, I have both now and will be selling the rear handle. The top handle model is 100x more comfortable to me.

I'm a little hesitant to invest heavily into the 36V line (despite having the circular saw, miter saw, blower) because the release of the 40V single battery is on the horizon, but I have dozens of 18V tools so at least the 18V batteries are compatible between 18V and 36V.

There is no difference between the 18V and 36V systems. They all use the same batteries.

Makita's 40V system hasn't even been released in the US yet. They are currently only offering tools that are identical to the 36V equivalents, or are shipping both a 40V and 36V version.

There's been lots of hand-wringing about the 40V system, but Makita is the only tool manufacturer that has not introduced incompatibilities into their system. The 18V LXT has been around forever and has a ton of tools.

Just got one - rear handle version. Was able to do the pick up and battery return right on the spot with the same guy, saved him the trouble of removing a security device. Zero questions asked. Refund was 97.04+taxes

This thing is MASSIVE. I think I can build at least half a house on 2 fully charged batteries. This Makita is an overkill for me. I'm keeping it if just to get a workout out of every cut I make. And my beard grew an extra inch just while I was unpacking the saw.

Recently my Bosch 18v impact and regular drill and makita orbital sander were stolen. Would it make sense to buy this and the other pieces separate or just but together as a kit? I see some kits that are ~$500 pretax, but would need to buy more batteries - only comes with 1 3.0ah. Any advice appreciated

Also curious if the x2 is compatible with the orig version

Makita has also been explicit that they are keeping both platforms, stating they are aiming the 40V more directly to commercial customers. I have the 36V miter saw and I don't know how much better it could possibly be at 40V.

I LOVE this saw. It is so nice to have power and batteries that run quite long as well. The back handle is great for cutting sheet goods... the weight almost adds some help in cutting straight.

Plus, the 40V is 36V anyway - they are just switching to DeWalt voltage exaggerating, 40V Max is 36V typical. So power will be the same, just a single battery.

Yes the x2 is the exact same, but need 2 obviously for it to run. Your best best is to get this (you will get 4 batteries out of the deal) and then just look for deals on individual tools (HD clearance is where I've gotten a few). Kits do go on sale too, but not very often. Sometimes the really good deals are on older, non-brushless tools but wouldn't get too caught up on that unless they're something that munches through batteries like circular saws and grinders.

Is this a good deal for someone who just wants 2 batteries?

i.e. Sell the full kit (saw, 2 batteries, dual charger), and keep the 2 'bonus' batteries?

By my math, it seems like a good deal, but I've never really looked into how to get makita batteries cheaply.
