There are two major causes:

1. small ram (8GB total, including 2-4GB for VRAM, only 4-6GB left for the system and applications) and ARM chipsets' increasing demand for RAM (due to weak RAM management on the legacy Unix/Linux memory/swap system with ARM instruction sets).
Apple's solution: disproportionately increases the size and usage of the swap partition;

2. Rosetta 2 translation demands larger RAM than X86, X64 precompiled apps.
Apple's solution: disproportionately increases the size and usage of the swap partition, again.

So, you would expect a significant reduction in SSD lifespan on an M1 Mac compared to an Intel mac, not to mention a Windows pc which has a much more robust ram/pagefile management system.

Just to be aware I checked on an Intel Mac mini I use at work and the SSD is also reporting high amount of writes (write amplification). So I don't think this is M1 specific. It's not macOS Big Sur either cuz I'm still using Catalina.

I posted in MacRumors but the thread is so long it's buried.

I switched from Windows to Mac 10 years ago because its flexibility, I can use x64 apps, play games and do a lot of things from both worlds. New M1 force user into apple eco system. Don't get my wrong, I've almost every apple product, Apple TV 4K, watches, iPad, iPhone, MacBook Pro but I'm just not sure about M1 anymore. Life should be more than just web browser and photo/video apps. Sure, you can run Windows ARM but it's useless. I just wish apple continue offer intel Mac.

this M1 chip has a higher return rate than other macs simply because the eco system is not fully geared up for it yet. The hardware is amazing, it is just the 3rd party software are not ready yet. I tried the mac mini and returned it. It could not even get my blue yeti microphone functioning properly while my macbook 2013 has 0 problems with it.

How does it benefit Apple to support very old hardware? Why would they? Out of the goodness of their heart? They're a business. they actually do security patches longer than most other mobile hardware vendors. The new m1 is class leading by a significant margin. Intel and AMD got lazy with their general purpose compute design and got lapped this race, just like AMD passed Intel last year.

If your mic is class compliant (I think yes it is) than you have something else going on. People are already running all major and complex aggregated audio setups and have been for months.*

Looking into it, it's Blue's bad software, just don't run it, the mic will likely work fine.

Ryzen on 7nm is not that far behind. There's a lot of good M1 stuff but don't get too twisted, 6 or 8 core Renoir tests at much, much faster than M1 for me. (while using much more power too)

No, it wont work for us. wife is professional announcer. we can tell the difference. we exhausted all solutions available online. That being said, i also need to run x64 linux virtual box (oracle) for my programming job, it wont do it for now. my main horse machine is still macbook pro 16, it is already very quiet compared to previous gen intel CPU. i will wait for the eco more ready to pull the trigger.

What I'm saying is that the mic would have likely been fine without the software loaded.

There are so many options for great mics including interfaces and XLR mics, or I like the g track pro, for a USB mic. Like the yeti it's multi-pattern.

Of course, it's still brand new and I understand m1 might not be your use case, but it really is great for (I think) the vast majority.
