I recently got this printer, didn't get a deal unfortunately. It's a fine laser printer. Toner isn't that bad compared to other laser printers out there. Genuine toner goes for roughly $60 per cartridge. We tried an off brand one where all 4 were about $50 but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. Poorly manufactured or repurposed toner cartridges can leak and ruin the whole printer, so keep an eye on it if you do.

What we learned the hard way as this is our first laser printer is that it's definitely important to choose the proper paper type before you print. Different types of paper require different printing speeds, heat, and amounts of toner. If you don't set the proper paper type, you can end up with either a mess of toner or spots missing toner in the image.

Also, no, we haven't tried printing photos so I can't comment on that. However, photos have been included on some documents we've printer in our home and they have always looked pretty good on a normal paper. All of the tones and colors look fine. Will it handle photo paper well or print a photo well? I can't answer that. I don't know.

Does this model have duplex scanning? If not, which is the model that does? The Canon model numbering system never makes sense to me.

Photo printing nope. I'd recommend a inkjet over this for that purpose. Lasers can't really print glossy photos. For Everyday document printing the photos and graphics are much better on a laser than an inkjet.

642 vs 743 are faster print, larger tray, duplex scan, duplex print and larger toner right? Anything else?

I thought about getting one in the past but the bad reviews turned me off to it. Carts are 70-100 bucks if anyone was curious.

642 has duplex printing as per Best Buy specs but not duplex scanning.

Not really. Color laser printers can make passable photos, but are more for documents/newsletters/cards, for which laser is far more cost effective than inkjet. A good inkjet with photo paper will give you wall quality photo prints, but it is almost always more cost effective to use a service like Walmart/Walgreens than own your own inkjet.

Thanks. I was reading comparison and it was 644 which they said didn't have duplex printing. And I assume that 64x series are the same. Is this printer a lot cheaper pre pandemic?
