* carbon filter isn't that useless mesh. It's actual carbon pellets with lots of surface area so it will remove more VOC's.
If you get one, make sure to use real filters. Lots of filters out there of unknown quality. Anyone can claim their paper is a hepa filter. At least the winix ones have been tested to actually work. It's pretty pointless to buy something like this then buy a cheap filter and hope it does something.
Should last at least a year with a filter. If you vaccum it out, and don't smoke or live in California wildfire areas, more like 18-24 months.

And don't be sold by the "washable carbon filter" in the title here. You still need to replace the HEPA annually.
The Costco one comes with 8 carbon filters and 2 HEPAs. Much easier to replace the carbon than wash each time. (Not 100% but the genuine winix 535 replacement filter (4 carbon, 1 HEPA) goes on sale at Costco for $30).

Filter price for Costco model is higher and you can probably only find it at Costco. Means if Costco stops offering the filter, you get no substitution

And don't be sold by the "washable carbon filter" in the title here. You still need to replace the HEPA annually.

The filter size for 535 and 5500 are different. I have 5500 and I feel like 535 is much smaller

I thought the same but it wasn't the case. My room is covered with white dust when i use the 3rd party ones. Even though i see it catches a lot as well. With the OEM filter, i see very little dust in my room.
