Program Details:

You activated to earn 5% Cashback Bonus at Restaurants and PayPal from 7/1/21 (or the date on which you activate 5%, whichever is later) through 9/30/21, on up to $1,500 in purchases. Restaurant purchases include only those made at merchants classified as full-service restaurants, cafes, cafeterias and fast food locations. PayPal qualifying purchases are those made through the PayPal wallet online, when you send money to Friends and Family via PayPal using your Discover Card, and point-of-sale transactions using PayPal Here. Payments made through the Xoom transfer service are not eligible for 5%. Any restaurant purchase made using PayPal will only be awarded a total of 5% Cashback Bonus. PayPal, the PayPal logo are trademarks of PayPal or its Affiliates. Listed merchants are in no way sponsoring or affiliated with this program. Certain digital wallet transactions qualify for 5%, for more information see Discover.com/digitalwallets. Purchases made through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless card readers, virtual wallets or similar technology will not be eligible if the technology does not provide sufficient transaction details for rewards qualification. 5% Cashback Categories: In accordance with standard industry practices, merchants are assigned a merchant category code (MCC) typically based on their line of business, or the type of products and/or services they primarily sell or provide. Discover Card does not assign MCCs to merchants. Even if you make purchases at a merchant of items that appear to fit in a rewards category, the merchant may not have an assigned MCC in that rewards category. Only purchases made from merchants located in the United States are eligible for 5% Cashback Bonus. In order for a purchase to qualify for the 5% Cashback Bonus Program, the transaction date must be before or on the last day of the offer or promotion. For online purchases, the transaction date from the merchant may be the date when the item ships. We may add additional categories within a quarter that may also require enrollment. Rewards are added to your Cashback Bonus account within two billing periods. See Cashback Bonus Program Terms and Conditions for more information about your rewards.

I have bought gift cards from a popular gift card reseller....r@aise in past. Some gift cards are already at significantly reduced prices from there respective face value thus making them more cheaper when combined with this additional 5% savings........ just an idea.

Any issues with gift cards? I bought two and both were not supported from restaurants! Raise wouldn't refund and I lost $90.

that sounds a little unusual, please tell us what "not supported" means? they refused or their system wouldn't accept or they didn't recognize the cards?

Mt experience with them is all positive from last few years. Never any problem. I usually buy retail cards (Macys, Sephora, V.S, bed bath, Bath & Bodyworks, etc) from them and have occasionally bought Papa John's or Dominos or Red Lobster cards without any issues.

So for PayPal/Discover card and online purchases, so you basically pay with PayPal, pay your PayPal debt with discover card, then pay your discover card debt with your money?

Welcome ideas to maximize PayPal, I believe one time I was able to purchase gift cards at Walmart and pay with PayPal to get the bonus, would this work for this promo? Thank you.

It was kinda challenging to find a place to do it, but last year I got gas gift cards purchased through PayPal.

In other words, paypal is a payment processor. Yes, paypal is an interface to pay for various items/merchants using various payment methods - CC, debit, bank, even PP balance. so why would you use PP vs. just charging with a CC directly? Ease of use..... PP started out as a means to pay other people (not merchants) with credit cards (think ebay) and has since grown into a digital wallet.

Generally the receiver pays the fees - 2-3% depending. so you could just outright pay yourself (probably against T&C) or friends, and get your 5% from Discover but you'll also be eating the fees.

That's why people are talking about PP Key - essentially a virtual CC that allows you to run money through PP using a credit card, and just charging the Discover card directly.

They do.
It's not so clear, either way. What about purchases made from your wallet? I always keep my paypal cash balance at 00.00, but all my CC's are in my wallet. That should mean that every purchase I make with any of my CC's on Paypal should qualify, but will they? Or are they only refering to wallet cash balance?

You need to decide if that's worth it just to save the 5%. You might lose or forget to use the gift card. Plus if you use a credit card at Walmart, you'll often get extra benefits like accidental damage and theft protection, an extra year's warranty, etc. Use a gift card, and you get none of that. Since your credit card is likely giving you 1% to 2% already, is it really worth losing all those benefits for an extra 3% to 4%?

If you are buying groceries at Walmart, it makes a lot of sense. A new TV or computer? Heck no!

I don't see the problem of credit card companies activating these promotions automatically.
It's done on purpose. Chase/Discover aren't getting any money from you since the cards are $0 Annual Fee. They aren't in the business of purposely losing potential profits. So most likely it's always going to be an opt-in process, like it always has been.
