QC issues, terrible display(awful 22ms+ response times visible ghosting 250 nit 60% sRGB) not great thermals. Generally don't recommend
I wanted to love this laptop so much. I was trying to go from a desktop to a laptop, and it seemed to be the magical box that was powerful, but portable. I understand I was unicorn hunting, but this thing had more rules than a Mogwai. You couldn't use it with a dock with the lid closed.. The air flow was designed to have the lid open. Earlier builds of this model had a problem with using a dock that would power USB-C. It would fry something inside and your machine was dead.

I'm hoping that down the road, this is the machine it was meant to be.
I have the M15 and I can't recommend Asus. Too many minor details overlooked. Occasionally the mouse will screw up and feel like there's a third finger there causing it to jitter. May be a different laptop, but Asus QC has me second thinking their stuff. Fantastic price for their hardware...

I'm super happy with this laptop. Bought it open box and have had it for a few months. It rips, for what I do. I'm not really gaming on it, but processing data in reports and databases. I have it hooked up to a docking station through usb-c. That docking station supports my keyboard and a 36" monitor. I have had very few problems with this laptop and use it a ton. There have been quite a few bios updates since I have owned it. I would definitely recommend this laptop and would buy it again.

Is the fan for this laptop loud, from idle to active? My biggest gripe with laptops is their fan noise volume.

This offers an unusual combination of ultrabook portability and gaming performance on the cheap. Highly recommended.

Pros:
  • Wicked fast (even though it's last year's model)
  • Excellent speakers
  • Lightweight
  • Very solid chassis
  • Excellent trackpad
  • Great keyboard (though a bit squishy)
  • USB-C charging useful in a pinch (not while gaming)
  • Quiet operation when not gaming
  • Power brick not too big (for a gaming laptop)
  • Has fingerprint scanner
  • Excellent battery life if not using discrete GPU
  • Vibrant screen
  • Good screen refresh rate (though not top of line)
  • 1080 screen = faster frame rates when gaming
Cons:
  • Fans loud when gaming
  • Thermals are good considering the size of the computer, but limiting CPU boost is recommended (search reddit for steps)
  • Keyboard backlighting is hard to see unless very little or no ambient light
  • Keyboard layout missing some keys
  • No webcam
  • Some quality control variations reported (happy with mine)
  • Some screen backlight bleed (not much on mine)
  • Screen not that responsive for certain types of games (not noticeable for most)
  • Screen brightness fine inside, but not great in daylight
  • 1080 screen not as good for productivity as 1440
Fantastic computer overall. The screen, keyboard, and trackpad aren't as good as a Macbook or Pixelbook i7, but they're still great.

However, some reviews say that Asus incorporated the best parts of the G14 into the 2021 redesign of the G15. It's 0.7 pounds more than the G14, but that seems like a reasonable tradeoff for a 15.6" 1440 screen. Might get the 3070 version (though bang-for-your buck, the 3060 is probably the sweet spot and it's in stock [bestbuy.com] for $1500... 512 GB is a bit low, but the G15's extra M.2 slot makes that easy to address).

Gaming yes loud that only over the ear headphones can fix, browsing internet I don't think the fan kicked in.

Vibrant screen/display is far from the truth, it's the worst you could get in pretty much any laptop besides TN junkers or some 500$ laptops.. it's the terrible 60% sRGB variation as is all of the bad 120hz panels along with low color 60hz panels found on cheaper laptops. Wicked fast is some bizarre definition, that's how most would describe a solid 3070 laptop or 2060 type deal. This is a rather anemic 60w 2060 that's substantially slower than a last-gen laptop 1660ti, haven't seen anyone describe a 1660ti as wicked fast.. the rest of this description seems pretty good but also mention the instant brick situation if you plug in the laptop and use the USB C charging port for something that draws a lot of power like a dock and the entire laptop will frie itself(bricks motherboard) because asus never put in any protections or fixed the bios.

I recently bought the 2021 version of this laptop (5900hs & 3060), however I will be returning it for a 2021 G15.

A lot has already been said before on this forum but for me, these are the reasons for returning it:
- Poor colors. As said before this display has poor color reproduction. I could never get over the fact that a lot of things looked dull and wrong. For example reds and blues are dull while greens are great.
- Input lag. This display is 144Hz and improved on the 2021 G14 but it's still bad! Inputs are delayed and this really takes the fun out of playing FPS games. Casual games and productivity use will be fine however.
- Poor display response. This is noticeable when gaming, as blacks and other colors will essentially smear across the screen. Running the UFO test is an absolute mess and unacceptable for a display in a gaming laptop. G15 display has 100% DCI-P3 color reproduction and is much more vibrant with better response time and input lag.
- Poor thermals. CPU likes to sit at about 96C and the CPU runs at about 85C. For me that is unacceptable regardless of form factor. The 2021 G15 runs at 70C on the CPU and 65C on the GPU.

Pros:
- Battery life: I was getting over 9 hours of battery life at about 30% brightness.
- CPU performance: This thing outperforms the G15 despite running hotter..... Destroys anything Intel has to offer.
- Keyboard. Excellent tactile feedback and clack. Keys are stable and of good quality.
- Trackpad. Glass trackpad is excellent and almost as good as a Razer Blade.
- Speakers. Probably the best speakers I've ever heard on a laptop....

Screen Vibrance:

I bought a Legion 5 before getting the G14. The Legion's screen is very well regarded and on paper has advantages: higher refresh (240Hz), faster screen response (1-3 ms), brighter (500 nits). It also has less backlight bleed. But side-to-side, the Lenovo's screen was a bit dull compared to the G14's.

I often switch back and forth between it and a Macbook and Pixelbook i7; the other screens are better, but the G14 is still quite good (though I'd like more pixels for general use and Tabletop Simulator).

Speed:

Compiling and encoding are indeed wicked fast considering it's a 3.5 pound computer.

For gaming, it depends on what you throw at it. MS Flight Sim is pretty intensive, but I find it very playable even with most settings on high (and some on ultra). Still, concerns over performance at 1440 are why I ordered the 3070 G15 rather than the 3060 G15 (happened to find the 3070 available for pickup in a week, and had a birthday coupon, so I jumped on it).

My Legion 5 produced higher frame rates than the G14, but not by much (the G14's faster CPU offsets some of the Legion's higher wattage GPU advantages) and 5.5 pounds vs 3.5 pounds was noticeable (that's the main reason I returned the Legion 5).

If you don't prioritize portability, there are heavier laptops with better performance (or you can get a desktop).

USB-C charging:

Indeed there have been some cases of people frying their motherboards [reddit.com] after simultaneously charging with the power plug and USB-C(PD). It's a pretty serious design flaw (I don't know if they fixed it for the 2021 G14, or if it's an issue with the 2021 G15).

Some users reported having no problems keeping their 2020 G14s plugged into USB-C(PD) monitors while also using the power brick, but I decided not to take any chances and use a DP to USB-C cable.

Make sure the laptop is factory reset and then install a good security software like Bitdefender Total Security. No issues.
Don't be too sure. Security software generally only detects known exploits. After my kid had an issue with Discord I wrote my own simple monitoring app and the installed security software didn't even notice.

With open-box I recommend you always re-install windows fresh. Backup the old install with Macrium/Acronis if needed.

Assuming most people reinstall Wndows for Bestbuy and Costco returns doesn't this mean the drivers are a wreck on these returns?

It really doesn't use much power it's a 60w GPU aka literally laptop 1650 wattage. If you think display is fine then that's a example of you needing to get your eyes checked, not others silly. But it's good you didn't have QC issues as that really kills a laptop

Well friend you are just wrong. Want proof? Read some reviews and the number of thumbs up on the deal. You fail in the court of public opinion.

this is one of the best rated laptops in it's class. your opinion can't change that.

have a great day pooping on other deals.

No, reinstalling drivers isn't a big deal. I refreshed me, worked fine.

How? The legion 5 RTX 2060 and 4800H absolutely demolishes this G14 in games/performance and is the same price, and on sale it's cheaper. The Omen 3060 is also frequently 1150$ and will also easily beat this G14 in games. There are also RTX 2070 laptops and when on sale go for 1100-1200. Also, the very idea that this gets the same frames as a 2060 super is absolutely insane. That 2060 super literally runs at 175 watts, know what the max q 2060 runs at? An anemic 60 watts. This is the equivalent of saying a 3060ti runs the same framerates as a 3090. Your desktop PC is either broken or you're lying, or blind.

Yeah, sure. The legion 5 is ass . Cheap casing, hot as balls, no RTX, less ram.

Buying HP is a joke.

I'm thinking you're a hating troll because where do I say the 2060mq is equivalent to my Super?? It's a laptop , of course it's not as good as my desktop, but it performs just as well on OW, WOW, ESO, Witcher 3 and a few others on MAX.

I've read plenty of reviews. Really? What's the top comment ya goofie, most deals get easy upvotes on the main page, not always in the comment section. https://laptops.miraheze.org/wiki...phyrus_G14

Issues I've stated are real, and sad. Nothing excuses such a display. People need to be aware of that, or should we not educate them?

Cyberbully

That's exactly what you implied when you said it performs the same. Go read your original comment again and you'll see who stated it performed similar to the 2060 super, work on your wording. It's still flawed as you just said it performs just as well on a list of games when that's IMPOSSIBLE, are you using those words differently?

"Hot as balls" the legion 5 is literally known as the coolest running laptop in its class and is one of the reasons it's the MOST recommend laptop in this price range, must not know much about gaming laptops then huh. No RTX? Uh, I just stated it has a 2060.. that's an RTX card?? It's 16gb ram, and the G14 was never known to run cool either, certainly louder and hotter then the legion 5, RIP.

"Buying HP is a joke" this is the tell tale sign when somebody rights off all laptops under a brand just because and has zero legitimacy to their claims. And yet, the HP Omen was one of the best midrange laptops last year, right next to the legion. The chassis is mostly the same so the same pros of last gen apply to the new generation.
