There is a direct and proven link between radon exposure and lung cancer. Radon typically enters a house through the soil, so if you have a bedroom in a below ground basement that could have detrimental long term health effects.
My 5th grader understanding: Radon gas comes from the ground which can cause cancer if exposed for long periods of time at high levels. In areas with radon, you typically have to install pipes with fans to blow the gas up. This device detects the levels to ensure it's at safe levels
Former Radiation controls tech here.

Radon levels can vary daily. Radon is a product of the natural decay of deep underground Uranium deposits. First off, the amount of decay you get could vary daily.

Secondly, there is a thing known as a temperature inversion. If a cold front is moving in, with little wind, the cold air will fall, trapping gases rising from the Earth at the ground level.

A radon system will constantly and consistently vent the air from your basement. It will force the undergroun air right out and above your roofline.

I bought this the last time the $99 Amazon deal popped up. This has been a good device for us since where we live is known for high radon levels. Mine has been reading between 1.75-3.5 pCi /l for the last several months. This definitely beats the traditional radon tests we've been doing every 6 months. At this point, I'm considering installing a mitigation system with the fluctuating levels creeping towards 4 pCi/l

Ours would go from 4 to 7 based on the season. Since I had ours installed its' been a steady 0.6.

I have had this on my watchlist for a while, and this is definitely the lowest it has been. If you need one of these, I doubt it will go much lower.

Got it last time it was this price. Levels were around 6 or 7. I ended up installing a radon cover for my sump pit and the levels get to 3.5 on the high end which is good enough for me.

It's to measure radon in your home. Good to have if you're in an area with elevated radon levels...not everyone is

Try this https://www.epa.gov/radon/epa-map-radon-zones

Bought this after I did a short term test and it was at about 7. Getting a mitigation system installed this week. Was exhausting air out of my basement and that has kept the levels under 1.0 for the past few months. With being home all the time I think it's well worth it especially since I like to hang in the basement.
