A used AMERICAN Strat can be had for $200-$250 more. Just FYI, not dissing this deal.

There is a difference in the pickups and wood used. It's not crazy noticeable but a trained ear can hear it.

Wanted the tele but the gloss finish on the fingerboard makes it a deal breaker...

I got the Strat in last round and the only issue I had was the intonation springs on the bridge were too short so they make vibrating "buzz" when played. Easy fix but minorly annoying regardless. Wasn't sure about the color at first but ended up really digging it, as someone else said, the finish looks better in person, online pics don't do it justice. The modern C neck is very comfortable. The pickups on these are beautifully chimey, nuanced, pairs really well with my Vox AC10 for that amazing clean glassy tone.
As for comparison with G&L, I got in on the ASAT deal last time. While they were good value for the ~$300 price point and a step up from the entry-level Squires, they are not in the same league IMO to the Fender Players. The pickups on the MF edition were dull, the finish was dull, the neck felt rough, and generally just didn't do it for me. The G&Ls for MF SDOTD/special editions are cheaper for a reason. Perhaps the regular Tributes with MFDs etc would be more on par.

Yep. And, in fact, you could have bought a NEW American Performer just last week from Adorama for $230 more.

Looking at other Lake Placid Blue Fenders on the web- the color is hard to nail down what it actually looks like. I see some that the blue is calm and muted, and others that are very bright and vibrant. I like the stock photo, but is that a good representation of the color IRL?
It does reflect off the environmental light, so could seem brighter under bright light. However I'd say it's definitely on the vibrant side, even under dim light, it'd still be hard to describe it as muted to my eyes.

I didn't like it when the deal was live. But it grew on me later on. Dang!

Anyone looking for a beginner guitar should buy this Strat instead. It's a great playing guitar that sounds very nice. Nothing needs to be upgraded here - pickups and hardware are good. This will hold its value too, and it's a real Fender for just a few bucks more than a Squire.
IMO, not quite "a few bucks" seeing as a Bullet Strat (surprisingly very playable in my experience trying at least 20 of them over the past 7 years) goes for about $120 and an Affinity Strat (2x better than the Bullet in build quality and sound, plus they come with a bridge humbucker sometimes) goes for about $220. I know this might trigger the elitists, but a beginner on a budget of about $500 would get the most bang for their buck buying one of those and a decent modeling amp like a Fender Mustang or Boss Katana. For that, you get a huge range of tones to play around with for a reasonable cost. Plus, modeling amps have come a long way in the last decade. Any surplus should go toward picks, a capo, strap, good over-ear or around-ear headphones to plug into the amp for silent practice, perhaps pedals, or lessons. Just my 2 cents as a guitar teacher, for any beginners thinking of buying an electric guitar.

As for this guitar, this is quite a slick deal for anyone in the market for a Fender Strat. Regular price is >$700. Got a "limited edition" shell pink one last year from Musician's Friend for $550 so get 'em while they're hot.
