Don't bother, I did this, I didn't get a response for a month, and it was "hi swechsler, we hope you have received your reward by now".

Instead, read this thread and contact one of the mods there directly.
Signed up for one of these rebates back in January I think. Never received the rebate.
Doing everything you're doing, but faster.

Also, downloading large files. Backing up large files. Just having a better experience in general. 10 people are streaming in my house? I can still download something fast. I don't have to wait.

It lowkey bothers me when people say they don't need fast internet--I firmly believe you don't know what you need. There were plenty of people who said they don't need internet at all, or that 14.4 or 28.8 or 56k was fine back in the analog modem days. If we listened to these luddites we'd all be stuck with Australia speeds. Progress has been bad enough here, we should have fiber EVERYWHERE by now but the companies are pocketing the taxpayer money literally earmarked for infrastructure because of various loopholes. It's totally bullshit, but the only thing that will change their mind is demand and competition.

Also, due to network effects, the more people with faster internet, the better the experience is for everyone. People and companies won't innovate and provide new services if the capability isn't there, but once it's there, they will. Think high-bandwidth VR applications, cluster computing, extremely high quality streaming (you could even send raw frames), etc.

Push progress forward and get the fastest internet you can reasonably afford. If you're on a tight budget, I get it, I've been there.

But trust me, once you have it, it's hard to go back. It's like upgrading your monitor. Yeah, you can do everything just as well on a 19" monitor, but having a 27" monitor is just really nice. Same deal here.

Fios has been around for over 10 years and it is still not available in my city.

I live in one of the largest cities in the US.

I had Verizon. The thing bad about them is they gonna raise the price by a lot. I was with them for almost 20 years. They wont bring the price down or giving me any discounts. I keep bugging them but they wont budge. So I told them Im leaving and that was it. Verizon has great speed and reliable internet service. The pricing just sucks. Even their wireless service.
Just sign up as "new" customer every time the contract runs out. I usually just swap my name and my wife's name every couple of years.
Heck, I hear you do not even have to do that, just sign up using different email address. I know gmail, you can just use "." anywhere in your email address before "@" and it will just ignore that. For Yahoo, you can just create a new email address and use that.

Couple of questions:
1) my neighbors have FiOS but I am the rare bird that has Comcast. So there is fiber all over our street but it has never been actually connected to my house. Will there be an extra charge to bring the line from the corner to my house when I request connection?

2) is there an extra charge to configure my connection as an ONT only so I can use my own router assume I will be streaming over broadband w/no need for FiOS TV

Sorry, but what you said sounds like Comcast's ad in my area. Well, I have switched back and forth as you did. My two sons couldn't stand 300Mb speed. Whatever logic there is, the end-user experience is of utmost importance to me. To me, the two speeds cannot be compared in terms of the user's experience. Good for you if the slower speed works. It is cheaper too. I went down there. But I will not go down there again.
Don't conflate download speeds, upstream server issues or an average router that can't handle multiple clients and lack of range with your subpar user experience.

i signed up for 1 gig, but I'm starting to think it might be overkill. if I "downgrade" what do I have to know about the rebate and fios promotions? Is there a minimum period I need to hold 1gig so that the promotions don't get clawed back?

How do I do that.? Tell my wife to cancel account and have me sign up right after?

Before you pull the trigger on this, consider if you actually need 1gig... this is slickdeals and we are all about saving money!

We are a household of 4 who are always on meetings, streaming, downloading, uploading backups, from 2 dozen devices etc. We have a 400/400 plan that we pay $29.99 for ($39.99 plan minus $10 teachers discount). A 300 to 400Mbps plan should be sufficient for most and the double cost for 1Gig just seems excessive.

Yes, and you can schedule the shutdown and the start of service under new name in a way that there is minimal to no disruption in service.

I am still mad at Verizon for selling out to Frontier here in TX. FIOS as a service is pretty good though. Hard to get any deals unless you're a new signup though. Once the intro period is over... watch your bill increase every month.
Same. Keller was the original FiOS test area in 2006 too iirc. It was glorious. Thought they were building out to compete with att on its home turf on dfw. And they did, and then sold it. And google fiber gave up on its buildout too. At least att is finally building out fiber to replace it's adsl but I don't like their pricing model of jacking up the price after 12 months

I agree most may not need it, but it's less about the overall average usage and more about the burst transfers imo. If I'm downloading a 10GB game or massive windows update across multiple machines that gig speed comes in handy if you aren't the type to want to wait around for these things to finish. It's esp handy if you are a full cord cutter and get your tv vis online streaming apps, not because these apps need 1g, but because they won't degrade if you have several streams going plus several downloads. E.g. one of my son's PS5 games had a 10GB "patch" the other day.

Again, if you don't mind waiting a few extra mins, lower speeds are fine. But if you have Amazon prime, this is a great deal.

Admittedly I haven't read this entire thread, so if this was already mentioned, my apologies. For those that already have fios but want to take advantage of this deal, I was successful in getting a "new user" deal as an existing customer a few years ago using this method. I'm still grandfathered into the 1gb at $70. Go to this site and select move service:
https://www.verizon.com/home/moving/
Put your source and destination address as the same. If you aren't in an existing contract it should offer you new user deals, or at least it did when I did this a few years ago. If that doesn't work you can try to sign up under a spouses name as new service and cancel your existing (again, ensure you aren't under contract.) If that fails speak with customer retention and ask for the deal.

When I did this and the install tech showed up he was confused at the move order. I told him customer retention set it up that way so I could get the new deal and he pushed everything through. In my case a tech was required to convert my ont from moca (coax) to an Ethernet run from the ont to the router, but I *think* the new routers and ONT modules can do 1gig over moca 2.5.

Many say you don't need gigabit speeds, but you also have to consider things like gaming. Yeah gaming doesn't consume much bandwidth, but if someone is watching Netflix or streaming anything, it will affect your gaming. Even though your not constantly downloading, it only takes a second to add latency in your gaming. I used to be on 50Mbps a few years back, and trust me it will cause latency in your games. Having gigabit internet makes it so no one in your household can saturate your line.
You realize that we're not talking about 50Mbps and instead 300-400Mbps being adequate, right? And if someone streaming 4k at less than 25Mbps it shouldn't affect someone gaming unless you have a *really* shitty router or ISP.

Or asymmetrical upload/download speeds. I'd *vastly* prefer Verizon's 400/400 over Comcast's 1gig/35Mbps. If you're gaming, the limited upload speeds are going to affect you WAY more than the max download speed. This is a perfect example:

The issue with Comcast's 300Mbps plan isn't that the 300Mpbs isn't enough, it's that your upload speed was limited to only 10(!!!!!) Mbps. Check it out [arstechnica.com]. Of course at that level you're going to get issues trying to game on multiple devices, especially if you're doing any type of video calls that eat up some of that outgoing bandwidth. And even on your gigabit plan, you're still only getting upload speeds of 35Mbps.

Again, Verizon (and other fiber networks) are symmetrical, which means that if you're paying for 400Mbps down, you're also getting 400Mbps up. That will ensure plenty of headroom for just about any type of gaming, video chat, streaming, etc.

No matter which service you use, having your own router and other layouts to cover the entire house should be assumed. And I did that with both services. You save money and get the best experience in that way.

As Kumicho mentioned above, the upload speed of Comcast is horrendous. I get about 8-900Mbps upload speed with FIOS. I teach courses overseas through Zoom. I can't risk any freeze-up on my side. Of course, you will be fine with slower speed for regular surfing and one of two zoom sessions. But, that's like arguing that we don't need cars because most of the time you don't go far. My point is this deal is good if you can afford it.
