The TP-Link Kasa line is very good, and one of the few brands I'd buy that rely on an installed middleware app.

With any smart appliance that requires middleware, you're at the mercy of the manufacture. If they stop supporting the middleware, you have an expensive paperweight.

TP-Link is a big company, and I would reasonably expect them to continue to support the firmware for the foreseeable future.

I have a bunch of the previous generation of these, but, hey, they're good. In for four more.

Damn that's a good deal. I almost bought one for $9 yesterday but I don't need 4...

Edit: Well you farkers got me again. Just bought a 4-pack of something I only needed one of. I'll have to find some creative use for the others...

This beats the $5/ea price I paid at Home Depot around Black Friday (as long as you don't mind buying 4).

Some of the plugs will show how much power is being used by whatever you have plugged to it. Nice feature to keep track of power consumption.

allows you to track current, daily, weekly, and monthly electric consumption and hours of use. The KP115's do this, but are substantially more expensive (around $23/ea, haven't seen any deals).

I have 7 of them myself, and I'm feeding their data into a Prometheus+Grafana dashboard.

I just bought the 3 pack of the HS103 2 weeks ago at the same price. What's the difference?

EDIT: I just looked at mine, same 15A, slightly different appearance basically same price, but obviously 4 pack. This would have been a much better deal, too bad I tossed out my packaging already.

Slickdeals has historically been a good place for discussions like these. Where all have you used a smart plug?

We've got one on...
-A crockpot so that I can turn it off a couple hours before dinner
-The washing machine to make our old washer capable of a delayed start for overnight or while at work washes
-The pergola lights since they have an IR remote, but let's be honest, that's a joke.
-Outdoor path lighting
-My server (energy monitoring to Sense)
-My desktop (energy monitoring to Sense)

And a Kasa power strip on the home "theater" setup for both energy monitoring to Sense as well as to easily power cycle the TV/Shield/etc when something becomes un-synced. In the future, this might also be for limiting TV time for the kiddo.

What other ideas have you come up with?

Can these types of smart plugs work when the internet goes out? Am I able to control them locally on a network without internet access? The power switch on these would not be accessible for me, since they would most likely be plugged behind furniture.

As long as your phone(app) is on the same wifi network you should be able to control without internet. Some phones kick off the wifi when there's no internet access so it might not always work.

Out of all the smart plugs I've used (Feit, Wemo, Amazon included) Kasa plugs connects to the Wi-Fi most consistently and does not lose connection. Their app is also more intuitive to use if you need to set up runtime or smart scenes.

Can it handle a washer machine? That sounds like a good idea if it can.
