Great knife, real wood side panel (rosewood I think), super sharp, very good blade metal, and Made in USA!
The heat treat matters more than the steel, for the most part. Properly heat treated 420 is a fine EDC steel and easy to touch up. S30V holds an edge longer, but is much much more annoying to sharpen.
They also have the Buck 119 for $47.63 !

Agreed.

WAY too heavy to carry. If I'm putting anything on my belt and its that heavy it's gonna be a multi-tool.

Not super easy to open and close either.

I LOVE that it's made in 🇺🇸 but better options at this price point.

Btw you can't compare this to the Bugout. It's got S30V steel, not a lock back and is almost triple the price (~ $100)

The blade 420HC high carbon steel used here is entry level / low end steel. Its edge retention is sub-par. 420HC is commonly seen in a regular knife.
'Made in USA' does not necessarily mean good quality.
If you want high quality knife, we are talking about VG-10, S30V or above.

14c28n... by far my favorite of the budget steels.

I like the buck in the OP, but as some have said they are kind of losing hard to these chinese manufacturers.. good service and quality though. but just a poor steel choice imo.

I picked up a 1960s 110 (Maybe early 70s) at a garage sale about 6 years ago and sent it off to Buck for servicing. For the $9ish dollars including shipping it back, it arrived polished, oiled, and sharp as hell.
Gotta love a company that takes care of their customers and products!

For those worried about this one being too big/heavy, I have the Buck "The 55" which is the smaller version of this and I find it perfect for keeping in my pocket. Maybe wait for a deal on that.

Buck does make this knife in several variations, including S30V, but of course it costs more than $35.

They're great knives that are absolutely a classic, but I'd have to disagree with you on the blade steel. They still use 420HC (what's used on most cheap Chinese pocket knives) on all but their limited run knives. It's not a horrible steel, but there are much better budget steels out now. Get with the times, Buck! That said, I still own one 😝.

Actually it has some proprietary heat treatment and conpares to good sandvik

Great knife...but heavy. I rarely carry it because of this, unless I'm camping/fishing/hiking/etc.

For those looking for a similarity priced knife that's much more carriable the Ontario Rat is very nice. The honey badger is also great. Both are around $35.

Rosewood is under the most strict export control of any wood in the world. It would be illegal to be Rosewood.

420HC is the cheapest and lowest quality steel used in knives today.

As far as I'm aware, 420HC is only made in China. It's probably stamped and assembled in the USA.

Buck has a lot of history and their locking knife is iconic. It's not the best knife for $30, but it does have history.

I remember having a similar locking mechanism fail on me in my younger years (I was probably misusing it). Going to stick with my Kershaws and crkt with liner/frame lock

cold steel's locks are insane. if you're worried about a locking mechanism i'd definitely recommend them. they recently sold their company though, so quality might start going downhill, sadly..
