I've built 2 systems based on this board and a 5900x and they have been rock solid. Have XMP, PBO, and Smart Access memory enabled. No issues.

Been looking at motherboards recently and saw good things about this board but everyone in this thread seems to have issues with it. So what's a better alternative in a similar price range?
No matter what board you look at, you're always going to find someone who had problems with it. Remember that thousands of people read these sites. And a lot of them overclock, putting more stress on their systems. A few people with bad experiences is inevitable. Look at reviews on Amazon and Newegg.

This is about the best motherboard you can get in the under $300 price range. On Amazon, 94% have given it 4 or 5 stars. On Newegg, it's 80%, with a lot more 1 stars, probably because there are a lot more hardcore overclockers who shop there. The only board in this price range that comes close is the Asus X570-Pro TUF Gaming Wifi. The TUF X570-Plus is also quite good, if you're looking for a cheaper board.

For me, take all means to avoid ASRock motherboards. Too high failure rate.
Is this for AMD or Intel as well? Generally, I've thought of motherboard manufacturers as:
Top: Asus & Gigabyte
Great: ASRrock
Good: EVGA & MSI
Then everyone else at mediocre or lower.

Is ASRock worse than they were 8 years ago (before my kid was born and I followed this stuff better)?

I've been using an ASRock Pro4 since it came out and it's been rock solid. Not a single problem. In fact, my past experience with Asus hasn't been great (mainboards and video cards). Gigabyte just ok, and the two MSI mainboards I've used were solid. I will also offer that a lot of people wrongly assume what part of their system is crap. For example, I've known people who blamed frequent random crashes on mainboards when the problem turned out to be a bad psu or ram.

A lot of good points. It took me like 3 years to figure out my power supply and RAM were causing my problems (this was several years back with a triple-channel Nehalem.

Only from my personal experience: we have a workgroup of 12 PCs. We use the same config and motherboards being ASRock. After one year, 6 of the 12 ASRock motherboards gradually failed. I don't know other brands of motherboard that has a 50% fail rate after one year.

Just reached DDR4 5000 last night. What a ride. Took 1.35v on the SoC. This is NOT 24/7 voltage, but it does work.
