I purchased this last time it was on sale for $534. Decent laptop.
Nice screen, keyboard is somewhat annoying since it's gray and back lit. You would have to turn of the keyboard lights during daytime to see the letters properly.
Over all it is thin and light but the exterior shell is plastic not aluminum, which fooled me into thinking it was aluminum but I was surprised when I received it.
RAM is upgradable, I added another 8gb stick.
Here is a link to the RAM stick sold by Dell. It was on sale when I purchased it for $52 now its $77. You can find similar RAM for cheaper on Amazon. https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/d...023/memory

all in all good purchase for the price but make sure you test it well during the 30 return period because Dells customer service is terrible.

Edit: even though you get a free 1 year of McAfee included in the price, Dell for some reason bill it on a separate line in the invoice. my invoice showed $37 line for McAfee. I called and requested for a refund, and after some haggling the rep refunded the McAfee charge. so I ended up paying less than $500 for the laptop. make sure you give this a try if you decide to go for it.

Most Ultrabooks don't have one since people tend to use wifi. Or you could use a $10 dongle to convert from USB to Ethernet

It's not about the $5 or being "cheap" - look at the profile pic of the laptop on the sides. It's barely bigger than the size of the USB port on the side. Including an ethernet port would probably make the sides 30% larger at least, and that is huge. Most newer ultrabooks don't have ethernet anymore either to help keep the profile as thin as possible, and you can spend $3,000 on one if you wanted.

And as someone else said, the amount of users that would actually use an ethernet port on a laptop 14" or under is probably under 5%. It's not a desktop replacement, and is designed for portability. I personally don't know what situation I'd ever plug in an ethernet to my laptop instead of using wifi. I could see doing that if you are buying a desktop replacement laptop, but not an ultra portable 14".

I understand your $5 part argument but your other part of the argument i dont agree with. Its a laptop that's meant to be portable and most users now a days do not have to plug in their laptops to an Ethernet port so its definitely not a deal breaker along the "why would anyone buy such a thing" lines.

I work on a laptop at times and on wifi as I have a strong stable wifi but also have a dedicated office Desktop for that as well. For the laptop if I am going to be setting up on a desk to work from then I am already connecting other stuff; wireless keyboard/mouse, dual monitors, speakers, headset so plugging 1 more USB connection for a LAN wouldn't be foreign or unheard. I actually have a USB Hub and a USB C Hub to do just that (both of which have a LAN port) so everything is connecting to my laptop with a single USB/USBC cable....

Shahhere

PS. I bought a Lenovo 17" from Costco that was $1800 and that did not have a LAN port probably due to it trying to stay on the thinner side but did include a USB to LAN dongle....
I agree with your points except for that it would impact thickness. Those Ethernet plugs that collapse and are on a spring can reduce to the thickness of a USB a port, so they could make it work without impacting profile.

I didn't give my opinion either way WRT an ethernet jack. Just pointing out that "ethernet ports are huge and there's no mini version" is incorrect.

This was first released as India inclusive and there's quite a few reviews on dell india website.
Generally they are positive but some mention that battery life is not as good as expected from specs. Fingerprint reader is finicky. Display is very good. Plastic body.
Deal is tempting, thanks OP

I bought this same laptop May 1st. I find the silver keyboard hard to see and use. The backlight is not centered well and almost useless unless looking straight down. Otherwise except I added more RAM the laptop was good.

I brought a Dell Inspiron last year. I understand it's the cheap end of the laptop line they make, but their QC is crap. My Inspiron came with the screen bezel not even sitting flush against the glass. I didn't notice it at first because the bezel is black. When I noticed it, I tried to press it in, and it caused the screen to crack at the point I was pressing. I didn't even use too much force, but since it's not sitting flush, I guess it concentrated the pressure. Anyway, I called Dell to see if they will cover the repair, but they just assumed it was a crack from dropping. No going to buy from Dell again. If you guys do want to buy Dell. Inspect your laptop when it arrives, and don't try to fix it if you find something wrong.

Thank you for your post. I was gonna buy this to replace my Asus Zen book because it has the same tipis issue, gray backlit letters. Makes it hard to see in bright lights.

This has better specs than my Zen but not enough to try and sell the Zen on CL at a loss. Thanks again for your post as I'll pass on this one now.

Btw, gray keyboard lettering sucks.

It clearly says aluminum in multiple places, perhaps you got a different model?

Out of all the Dell preinstalled program, which one would have significant impact to performance or memory usage that people would uninstall right away? And which one probably ok to keep it around?

It actually looks like a Dell Latitude 7000-series. The bottom side of the Latitude looks exactly like that. As a matter of fact, I have a Latitude 7490 here with that hinged ethernet port that looks just like that picture. I can assure you it's Gigabit ethernet and the laptop is well over $1000 in cost.

You are welcome. Like some one else said on here, its a personal preference. My sister found no problem using it for college but I personally found it annoying.

Man, basic ultrabooks have come pretty far in just a few years. This is a decent enough deal on a great machine

I've seen it on Dells page. But while removing the bottom cover (which is a one piece that covers the whole bottom) to upgrade the rams, one of the clips cracked because it's made of thin plastic. Maybe there are other parts that are aluminum, but the one peice that is protecting the whole bottom of the device is definitely plastic.

Can someone tell how does it compare to the costco deal? I recently ordered it, now debating with this dell deal.
Besides the screen (13" High DPI vs 14"), the biggest difference is CPU and RAM. The Costco is a previous generation CPU but has more RAM. This one is a better CPU and iGPU, but less RAM (the ram is upgradable, but that adds ~10% to the price so isn't quite a direct comparison anymore)

That's a business lineup, not a consumer lineup. Most Business laptops with 14 or Higher sized screen do provide Ethernet port. We're discussing about Consumer Ultrabooks here. So, that comparison is invalid in the first place.
