Besides a lot faster, the electric hand planer is no different than using a manual hand planer for flattening a wide board. Not really the right tool, I doubt if you will get it right without a lot of practice..

But, using the right tool for your job, the electric hand belt sander, the standing drum sander, or even a thickness planer is the tool. Don't have those, an electric/pneumatic hand sander of whatever flavor and if no powered hand sander, then by hand with sandpaper.

The easiest and cheapest way? Use the appropriate paint stripper for polyurethane removal.

You would just have to take the guide off and do multiple passes.

Thanks for the reply. I have a random orbit sander, I'll just use that and work that coat off the piece. I guess I was hoping this could achieve the same result without having to spend all that time sanding. Glad I asked first! Thanks again.

Seems like a good price for new.
Discount Tools is currently selling the factory blemished for the same price after $7 shipping. The factory blemished one has been on sale for $47 shipped in the past, so if you don't need it now, you could wait it out.

Wasn't part of HD deal; I tried. I just bought one for $49 + $7 shipping from DTO, "factory blemished", would probably have bought this instead.
I did the same. Still waiting on delivery. Wish this was available a week ago.

Electric planers are game changers when it comes to installing new doors (or fixing ones that stick).

I always plane the hinge side before chisling in the hinges even if it's a tiny amount. It's a really big pain to manually do that 7 feet x how many doors in a house.

Also for triming the top and bottom if you only need to take off 1/4" or less you can make a line with a drywall T and plane right down to that. No circular saw needed. They've been putting that particle board on the bottom a lot anymore so it cuts thru like butter, messy dusty butter.

Get the wired version. Burns through a fully charged 4a battery in about eight minutes.

Absolutely, buy a Battery Adapter and use your existing 18v platform, LOTS of them out there but https://surebonder.com/collection...ry-adapter is pretty good

also badapter on ebya: https://www.ebay.com/itm/274187506899

Bought this 2 years ago as part of the 2-3.0ah stater kit hack. It came to 45.50 during that hack. I ended up using a circular saw to do the job I need and I returned. I have need one a couple times since than and was always annoyed I returned it at that price. Oh well not as slick a deal as that, but still $59 ain't bad.

Is there a particular reason all electric hand planers are 3¼"? If it was just a quarter inch wider it would fit across a standard 2x4...

But sometime you need the portability. It saves time having a cordless.
If you are doing a lot of planing work, it would be ideal to have cordless and wired.
With that being said, if I had to choose one, I would go with the cordless with 8-min run.

I was looking into this one. I have to admit I'm a noob to planers. I'm assuming if I have stock wider than 4 inches I won't be able to use this correct? I have some old shelving that has a polyurethane coat on top that I want to remove. It's a 1x8 and I know I could sand it off but if this will do it for me. I might pull the trigger. Anyone have advice?
It will make a mess of things and you won't be happy. Just get some citrus paint stripper and sand the rest

Can this be used to square up studs/boards as an alternative to using a thickness planer and jointer?

Dude. It says Ryobi 18V. What else do you think 18V means?
