i have this on my spare lg v40. paid $10 for the sim back then and is on sprint network. good to have a spare number on top of a wifi device. do need to use it once a month otherwise they will cancel your service. no audio ads, just some ads displayed on the app that you use for call and text. not intrusive at all, imo. they have some good gif for text as well. it adds text and voice on an otherwise wifi only device. works well for me.

Grandma will chuck the phone as soon as she hears an ad every time she makes (or receives ? ) a call .

I have their app with a free local number (have to send or receive a text once a month to not lose the number) . I use it for offer up / craigslist transactions where I need to give a number to people when planning to meet up with them.
If that's your use case why not try google voice?

I think this service is nice because you actually get a physical number to go with another phone that you can use without having internet connection.

textnow is pretty good way to get a second number for whatever reason, especially if you mainly use it for text.

You could even use a PIN code to access the app for "whatever" reason.

Actually activating a sim is optional. You could just download the app on your existing phone, get a number, and use it to give out to people you don't want to give your main number to. It will use your phone's data for text and voip calls.

You will see ads interspersed between your texts messages (of course the recipients will never see it).

After you make a phone call, you will see like a 5-15 second ad on your screen that you can't X out of until it's done (unless you press the home button and exit the app altogether).

And yes, you can use textnow number for some verification codes. I used it for the Gpay Spring Stamp Promo and was able to get verification codes.

If you do use a sim card, you will get data on that phone for just the purpose of using the textnow app to make calls and texts. I did that on an old LG Volt (that I use to use for Ringplus) but ended up never using it on that phone and use the same account on my regular phone so I can have 2 numbers without using 2 phones.

I have never tried to use it for porting purpose.
Based on what you have described and if you are not even going to make use of the sim (which I see is the biggest plus for this service). Why not just use google voice?

I have Google voice numbers but don't want to lose them in case I decide to ditch the number.

I do have gv. Sometimes you may want a number not in any way associated with your main number. The pin access is a plus. Everyone situation is different.

I'm lost. Is this $5 activation kit mean you can make free cell calls and text forever? Can you receive them too?

Google voice works for most of it. I'm told US bank is no go. But BOA is good so far. Give it a try.

That's assumed correct for their VOIP service. This appears to be true GSM, which probably would work.

Edit: Still need to use their stupid app even with the GSM SIM. Guess it just blocks all data other than their app's ports/IP #, so it's still VOIP. Meh.
