Volt is their hybrid, electric and internal combustion. Bolt is plug in EV only for power.

Bolt is not eligible for the $7500 Federal Tax Credit anymore due to GM hitting the 200,000 vehicle threshold. There are a couple of proposals floating around including $7,000 credit for manufacturers over the prior cap and up to $12,500 for US union produced EVs (which the Bolt would qualify for).

Basically the support falls on party lines, unless it can be worked into a reconciliation bill or they blow the filibuster it's not happening.

Edit: just for clarity, didn't want to get the politics argument going on this more just a realistic view of whether the credit will get added to make this a much better deal.

Stopped at my 'authorized' dealer for Costco.
2021 hatchback with a few amenities...
(Don't have a relative/friend that works for GM.. would have saved me $15-20/month)

Lease 30k, $1300 down (first month + all taxes and fees) with all incentives available inclui Costco)

$325/ month.

Uhh...no
Uh....no.

We used all the rebates we were gonna get back as down payment. Eventually we got them all back in 2-3 months. The only out of pocket was taxes and fees. I think it was about $1700 or $1800.
Ok. I see how you got it so low now. Thanks for responding.

I've seen Bolt Premiers available for $24,500-$28,000. With the Costco discount the price drops to $21,500-$25,000.

The NEW EV credit that just pass committee in the Senate will knock an additional $12,500 off the price.

$9,100 for a new EV is a no brainer.

I see a lot of arguments in this thread on the quality of this car, but if you are paying $9,100 for a fully loaded EV with 250+ mile range BRAND NEW, I don't know how you can argue against what may be the slickest deal in years.
Well, is this a realistic number? If it is really $9,100 for a new EV, I'll go to the dealer right now.

Btw, how viable is it for a decent amateur home mechanic to maintain one of these, who is capable of doing most repairs on traditional internal combustion engine vehicles?
There's not really much to maintain.

GM may just jack up the price or cut incentives to offset some of that new EV credit if it passes, I dont for a second believe I'm getting away with a brand new Bolt Premier for under 10k ever!

In CA, between Nov and march, you could get one for under $11k with all the credits. But the problem with the $12,500, if its a tax credit, you have make ALOT of money in order to have a $12k federal tax burden after deductions.

What makes you think prior purchases would be eligible for the proposed tax credit? I doubt they would… or are you just assuming all of the current rebates are going to stick if/when the new credit passes? I would assume they won't…

I agree they wouldn't apply the credit to past tax years, but if the rebate applies to the 2021 tax year, any purchase made this year would net one the credit.

Most of the stimulus and tax incentives that have been passed over the past year plus have applied to the tax year they were passed in. Based on that logic, I would assume that if the bill passes before December 31st 2021, any purchases in 2021 would be eligible for the rebate.

I understand that purchasing in the hope that the bill becomes a law is a gamble. As someone else said, if the rebate passes, the price on these and other EVs are going to jump significantly, making buying before the bill passes, the right time to buy.

I'm in the market for an EV and was planning on buying used, but right now 5 year old used EVs are at best $16,000. $21,500 for a new one doesn't seem so bad and $9,100 seems like a steal that I might gamble on.

I agree. For everyone to switch to EV's the government is going to have to jam them down our throats. It has to happen for the good of the world. We all win with battery cars.
Government doesn't need to jam it down our throats. High gas prices will do the job just fine. In the last few months, everyone I know that's buying a new car is buying an EV (SoCal Area). Not just Tesla; Mustang, Niro, Bolt, etc.

If you have a garage, it's a much more convenient to have an EV than an ICE car. Plug in when you get home, full "tank" when you leave. The last time we needed to supercharge (40% to 80%), it was done before we even got our drinks from nearby boba shop.

The new bill is a tax rebate. However it's not passed yet and even if it does you'll see the price of these going for MSRP. Just like when the original 7500 was available you didn't see discounts on these. The bill doesn't affect this deal currently at all.

I was wrong.

I just read the bill:

"(3) EFFECTIVE DATE.—The amendments made by this subsection shall apply to property purchased after December 31, 2021."

When govt' enacts policy that jacks up gas prices, that is one way of jamming EV's down our throats tho.

No, it isn't approved yet and I just read the Senate version of the bill. It specifically applies to sales made AFTER December 31st 2021.
