Yes, I did default and settle one Chase card 12 years ago when things were a bit rough, but I find it interesting it still comes back to haunt me after all these years when I'm up to around 800 FICO score. And WTH is up with the deposit/investment accounts?

Explain to them that you did have financial problems at one point in time, but you've diligently worked on restoring your creditworthiness for the past 12 years. Also, explain that Chase found you responsible enough to approve your IHG card last month and you'd be more than happy to take $5K off the credit limit of that card to transfer to this Sapphire Preferred card.
