Loving all the comments like "lol a new CPU is coming next year that's way better." No kidding? That's how CPUs have worked for thirty years. AMD is firing on all cylinders and so the perf jumps are impressive, but Weird Al's "It's All About The Pentiums" more or less applies here.

This is essentially the best CPU you can buy today. If you need a computer today and not in 2022, then this is the top. If you don't need a computer today, obviously things are only getting better. (Well, maybe not on the Intel side of the fence.)
Sometimes I think we don't give enough credit to the magic they pull in the various cpu labs. The constant ability to get even more performance out of something so miniscule is insane.
this should improve my youtube and AOL email experience

16 cores is just too much. For most people, you are buying something that you don't need. For me, I brought a 6 core 2600x for $80 last year at microcenter it is good enough for me.
Its true about the cores. Game just don't make use of a lot of CPU power. There comes a point where extra FPS are just negligible

In 2019 I bought a Ryzen 5 2600 for $120 at Microcenter. Now it sells for more than that used on Ebay, At Newegg and Amazon its around $190 new. More crazy is that my RX 580 Nitro with 8GB ram was $210 new and now costs $700 - 800 new. Used on Ebay its 2x what I paid. So glad I built when I did.

Price per thread, the 5900X would be my preference. For this price of a 5950X I would get two used 3900X CPUs. However, I did order one of these because it was orderable. I want to play with a Zen 3 Ryzen 9 CPU.

5950x is actually a bad gaming CPU, youre better off buying the lower core count higher clocking 5600x-5800x especially if you care about money. 5950x is basically baby threadripper, its best for workstation/productivity use, not gaming. It still games well, but its a terrible value.

Unless you NEED to upgrade right now, you should wait. 16 core Alder Lake from Intel is coming in 3 months, which will beat Zen 3 IPC by 15%, have DDR5, have PCIE 5, and a ton of other new features and match multi-core performance for all AMD sku's but the 5950x.

So waiting not only gives you another option, it also means AMD is likely to lower prices.

But also, unless you have a new GPU, youre not going to be able to finish your build/upgrade for months anyways. So you should wait to get a new GPU before buying a CPU.

Also this is MSRP, youre not getting a deal here, youre simply buying a product (which ships in a month)
1. You don't know for sure that Alder Lake will a) be 15% ahead. b) release on time. c) be widely available. Remember, initial leaks claimed Rocket Lake would be clearly ahead of the 5x00 series and that turned out to be a big "womp womp."

2. Like most RAM releases, DDR5 will likely be extremely expensive for the first year or so. I definitely wouldn't count on it being reasonably priced.

3. Agree with your points about the 5950x being specialized and most people would be better off with a lower CPU. I have a 5950x and it is a beast but I use it for lots of specialized work too.

4. Your GPU point is valid. I ended up buying an Alienware with a 3080 and selling the rest of the system. Not as good as an AIB 3080 but I got the entire system for LESS than the cost of a 3080 on eBay and the sold the rest of the parts to my brother.

My advice to anyone looking at this CPU: unless you're doing lots of virtualization or content creation, it probably is worth looking at a 5600 or 5800 especially if gaming is your primary focus.

Why do you say that? shake head

Average bottleneck percentage: 1.09% (CPU bottleneck) 1080p

Average bottleneck percentage: 0.07% (CPU bottleneck) 1440p

Average bottleneck percentage: 0.25% (CPU bottleneck) 4K

Ryzen 9 5900X better value for most vs 5950x

The 5900X is going for around 650-700, if you can find it. With this at 800 and is available, most of these statements about what's "better value" are moot - they only apply in a normal market.

yeah, we should have comparisons on what's actually available. Even now , this 5950x is barely available. And I am talking msrp. scalpers should be ignored.

Speculating on " this and this cpu will be faster when released x months from now" are total bullshit. First of all if they are actually released on time (big quesiton with current shortages of everything), second IF they will actually be faster, it's guaranteed they will run into the same issue; they simply won't be available at msrp for a long time.
Nope, this IS a good deal right now.

Now we just need to know what motherboard and RAM to pair with this CPU. Thoughts? 64 GB of RAM is what I am looking at.

I have some ideas on the above but want to say what the collective says....

Are there any good motherboards with 10 Gbps onboard?

I use the msi tomahawk x570. It's a great board. Doesn't have 10Gbps on board (2.5) but you can easily add that, that's what I did.
