Loving all the comments like "lol a new CPU is coming next year that's way better." No kidding? That's how CPUs have worked for thirty years. AMD is firing on all cylinders and so the perf jumps are impressive, but Weird Al's "It's All About The Pentiums" more or less applies here.

This is essentially the best CPU you can buy today. If you need a computer today and not in 2022, then this is the top. If you don't need a computer today, obviously things are only getting better. (Well, maybe not on the Intel side of the fence.)
Sometimes I think we don't give enough credit to the magic they pull in the various cpu labs. The constant ability to get even more performance out of something so miniscule is insane.
this should improve my youtube and AOL email experience

Now we just need to know what motherboard and RAM to pair with this CPU. Thoughts? 64 GB of RAM is what I am looking at.

I have some ideas on the above but want to say what the collective says....

Are there any good motherboards with 10 Gbps onboard?
I asked a similar question earlier on in the thread, but got no response - hopefully your results are better; I also would like to know.

The 5900X is going for around 650-700, if you can find it. With this at 800 and is available, most of these statements about what's "better value" are moot - they only apply in a normal market.
The 5900x is in stock and going for $550 at microcenter, I bought mine back in April.

Its true about the cores. Game just don't make use of a lot of CPU power. There comes a point where extra FPS are just negligible

In 2019 I bought a Ryzen 5 2600 for $120 at Microcenter. Now it sells for more than that used on Ebay, At Newegg and Amazon its around $190 new. More crazy is that my RX 580 Nitro with 8GB ram was $210 new and now costs $700 - 800 new. Used on Ebay its 2x what I paid. So glad I built when I did.
I brought the same MSI RX 580 8gb used at ebay in for $120 shipped at end of 2018. Was used for bitcoin mining but it worked great for gaming for me.

AMD is ahead in benchmarks for right now which is why I chose them for my current build but it's locked up and crashed more times in the last two years than the ten years before that I had Intel.

Must be how you have your system configured. I have a 5950x, 64gb trident z 3600 cl16 and zotac 3080 amp holo all on a hero viii. Only locked up once but that was before one of the latest BIOS updates. System has been solid since. I came from Intel myself and had similar fears, but from reading around AMD is just a bit more picky about what parts play well with each other. But if you have all the right parts it is a very solid and stable system.

Same here. my 5800x build has not crashed once. Bad component is my guess

No crashes here as well. Built it early 2020 with a 3900x, x570 mobo, 2x32gb pc3200 corsair ram, 970 gtx, wd black nvme and no crashes.
Upgraded to an rtx 3080 and this 5950x cpu back in December.
Not a single crash. Only annoying thing is that windows updates like to automatically restart my pc.

I'm personally using the asus x570-e motherboard and the crucial 2x32gb pc3200 ram. I think the vengeance rgb.
From what I've read, AMD needs at least pc3000/3200 RAM. Going higher than that would be beneficial if you want to try to OC. Not like intel which can perform well with the slower ram.

What's like one below the top? I'm looking for a CPU with an iGPU. It's for ESXi, and would like to passthrough the iGPU to a VM. Should I just stick with an i7 11th gen ($350 at Microcenter)

10 years old now. The Sandybridge line was the best bang for buck chips I've seen.

The top Ryzen chip with an iGPU would hypothetically be the 5800G but it's not out yet, and the step-down 5600G is OEM only for the time being. All things considered, it does look like Intel 11 is going to be a better choice for this use case.

This was my conclusion also. I really wanted to go Ryzen this time around - but my particular use case, seems like a $350 intel is really going to solve it. Plus, I really want QuickSync.
