nascompares has a great article covering Plex support across the Synology models:

https://nascompares.com/2021/03/1...1-edition/

Per this - no support for hardware transcoding.

Some other links I've found particularly useful:
CPUs: https://www.synology.com/en-us/kn...y_NAS_have
Max Storage Size: https://www.synology.com/en-globa...limitation
Hybrid RAID calculator: https://www.synology.com/en-us/su...0TB|4%20TB

I've been hunting for a used NAS for the past month and while I'd love to save a few hundred vs new, it seems that the newer NAS' are way better than the yesteryear ones. Anything 4-bays or bigger tends to hold their value quite well on the used market as well - at least in the case of Synology - which I prefer for their hybrid raid.

For a noob like me, after all of my hunting, I've decided on the 920+ just for the simplicity of it all.
Very good price. Unfortunately the price of storage is currently cost prohibitive for me. Good deal for plenty of other people though I'm sure
$800 and i don't remember if I seen it on sale for below $720 ever... usually around $750

As a counter example I run Emby on my 918+ and 4K content is flawless with direct play to a shield, roku (TCL), and Android/iOS.

Shame that Emby doesn't get the same love as Plex. Tends to be very solid, has the right set of features, and responsive devs if there are issues.

I may try it.

I'm on DSM 7 Beta. When I type in "https://synology.emby.media/", it says invalid location. Did you update your DSM to 7 or are you still on 6?

Got it to work. You are right. Emby is blazing fast even with 4k. I'm going to do the trial. Probably will get Premiere.

The Plex transcoding has been crappy for years due to hardware limitation. I wouldn't get this nas in hope it will have better 4k remux transcoding. It wont work for sure. And overall, Synology is better when it comes to to software. Qnap's software is pure crap and many qnap users got hacked recently and were requested to pay ransom in bitcoin in order to unlock the locked files

I got my Synology today, despite it being backordered at the time I ordered it on Monday night.

Now I just need to find NAS drives that aren't ridiculously expensive.

My 920+ cannot play 4k in original in Plex. I was a little disappointed in that. I don't need to transcode it. I then got Nvidia Shield. Running Plex server on it worked for a few month now it's super unstable. I may just end up getting a PS5 for my 4K Blrurays.
I have a 920+ and Plex. I have no issue playing 4K original content on my 4K devices (nvidia shields and xbox one)using my 920+ directly. I can even play 4K videos over my RAX48 wifi router without issues using my 920+ directly. Now when I need to transcode 4K content to a 1080p device sometimes this works but many times this doesn't work well streaming directly from my 920+(allowing the 920+ to transcode). So I have a game machine that serves dual uses. I have plex loaded on the game machine that I can play my 4K content down to 1080p devices for the transcoding(the powerful desktop handles the transcoding, still streaming from the 920+). Hopefully you are using one of the newer wifi 6 based routers if you are using wifi.

Mine is hardwired. I think for some reason Plex is transcoding when it doesn't need to transcode.

Is this better then building your own NAS server?
Depends heavily on your use-case. If you like to build machines, have space for a larger server and don't mind noise where you're putting it -- building your own nas is a great option. And you can definitely build an awesome 6 bay server at this price point.

On the other side, this nas is super compact, has a low idle power draw, and low noise. It's also plug and play as others mentioned, not going to require a whole lot to get going. I have an unraid media server I built a couple years ago and stuck in my basement, I love it but it's bulky and pretty noisy. I pulled the trigger on this deal to put in my office on a bookshelf. I'm really impressed with how small it is for a 6 bay nas.

Yeah I'm still on 6.whatever - I won't be updating to 7 until fine folks such as yourself find all the bugs Big Grin

Did you disable transcoding in Plex?

I did. Still when I play for example the Last Jedi which I ripped the 4K bluray with MakeMKV, it has no option on my clients to play it without transcoding. Amby plays it hitch free with like 2 second load time. I prefer not to pay for another service. I already paid for Plex Lifetime.

I recommend you check on the plex forums for 920+ and 4K. I remember having to do something, some known issue I think it was. I'm sorry I can't remember. I mostly use Ethernet connections and one with a 4K tv with nvidia shield using wifi.
