Costco has what looks like a knock off Danby brand of the Media U shaped 8000 btu window air conditioner on sale at costco.com for $339.99 plus tax, includes shipping. I have been looking to buy the Media at amazon but the 8000 BTU model is currently only available through 3rd party sites for $561, so this seems like a good deal. I haven't purchased through costco.com yet, waiting to see if they have it in the July coupon book and in the warehouse.

In terms of actual issues, by the end of last summer the blower fan started to make a horrible squeaking sound. I didn't do anything with it at the time, but when I set it up again this week it was the first thing I heard on startup, and sounded even worse. After some disassembly I determined it was the bearing on the fan's motor. They go for like 10 for $10 on Amazon, and another $20-30 for a tool to remove the old one, or you could replace the whole motor. The actual replacement motor unit from Midea is about $50, but backordered until October. I took a chance and bought one on eBay that's making its way to me from China now.
The unit likes to disappear from the app a lot, and its kind of a pain to link them together.
The 8000 BTU has a loud beep whenever you press any button or perform anything in the app. Like, loud enough I can hear it almost anywhere in the house loud. When I had the unit apart to get to the motor I took the time to fill up the little speaker with super glue and add some tape on top to dampen it some, which helped. The higher BTU units can disable the sound via a setting in the app.
The air flap sometimes needs help opening all the way up.

Same. I own the Midea and highly recommend this style. You can almost fully close the window and don't ever have to fear that it'll fall down/off. Plus most of the unit is outside leaving more space inside your home.
No, it doesn't
Plus you can open the window as well
My window is only 18.5"w, gonna go cry in my corner now :'(

The sunroom is 18 x 12 - they say 8000btu is good up to 350 sq ft? Does that track?

True, I have and it takes up more space inside...just a little bit more. The benefit is that the system is much more level and is less likely to fall out the window.
