Mustad has a variety of hooks on clearance right now. Some of them are for more specialized types of fishing but some are good general use also. Last year's sale was better. I got ~$50 worth of hooks, which should last a lifetime at the rate I'm using them (i.e. sharpen and reuse).


Re "is it the higher the number the bigger the hook?":

In general hook sizes go like this (smaller -> larger): 8->6-> ... -> 1 -> 1/0 -> 2/0 -> ... -> 10/0.

But, having said that, each manufacture can have different sizing scheme. Plus, I can't imagine a size 16 treble hook; it'd be sooooo small.

The FP title leaves a lot to be desired. I love fishing deals, but 60cent hooks, minimum $50 shipping. Yeah, kind of kills it unless you are eager to load up on tackle.

I did just that. (last year). SD had a discount for 20% off. They had a 25% off this weekend for bass only equpment. Last year they did have a tog/bass/fluke jig kit for 50 bucks, with 20% off, came out to 40. I bought a bunch of circle hooks/octapus circle hooks cause of the change in striper regulations when using live bait.

I don't get the rule though exactly, as if your fishing bluefish, you dont need circle hooks, but if you snag a striper while fishing blue... I dunno?

Circle hooks are a great gift to fish and fisherman. I use them almost exclusively. It almost never injures the fish to the point where they can't be released.

Bluefish are plentiful, stripers are prized targets. I'm guessing it's purely based on which fish numbers are decreasing because of demand.

right, but in my very limited experience, its nearly impossible to target one over the other.. they swim the same area at the same time.

Isn't that the point? If you can catch either one, they are in the same habitat, are attracted to the same bait, they need to add restrictions to both species since you could easily land a Striper going for a bluefish..

That is the point indeed.. the regulation doesn't apply for bluefish. also it doesn't apply to using artificial lures. So jigs and bobbers and plastic swim baits don't need em because your more likely actively fishing rather than passively bait fishing.

I dunno. Should just have made all bait fishing be circle hooks instead. Shrug.
