The 14 inch version of this with the upgraded SSD and newest i5 is $499 as well, if anyone is interested.

Are the RAM and storage slots user-accessible?
RAM is soldered. There is an empty m.2 slot easily accessible on the bottom

It's not really a deal. It was 449 for a past few months. Walmart is clearing their warehouses ahead of back to school shopping

It might be because it's slim in one direction, but big in others! 15.6" LCD is big.

I own this laptop and it's pretty good overall for the price. It has an ips screen that has good viewing angles but doesn't get that bright. The trackpad is meh, and speakers suck but besides that it runs amazing. The bios is pretty barebones but there is an nvme option in the bios. But I'm not sure if this is for the main m.2 slot or the second one.

I got mine from vip outlet for 323 after a code. So for that price it's an amazing deal. For over $400 it's a good deal but would almost look at the new one with an 11th gen cpu that had a better gpu.

Wasn't this $279 a while back especially for and outdated last generation cpu that runs hot and throttles?

I bought the same model 2-3 weeks ago and have to return it.
In specs it's a "good" computer, but Gateway/Acer does not support this model.
It's a veeery slow laptop, even after install all the windows updates
Note: no official drivers could be downloaded

Gateway is still a thing?!?!?

I thought that brand died out like 15 years ago.

My very first "custom" computer was a Gateway. They used to be sort of like what Apple is today where they would have specialized stores with tech support bars etc. They were slightly over priced (far less so than Apple products) and they still ran on Windows, but they had slightly slicker looking machines than competitors, legendary customer support and an incredible trade in program where you could bring in your computer after a couple of years and get like 50% of your original purchase price towards a new computer.

They even had a trademark Holstein cow print that they used for their boxes and all marketing material.
You still get that Cow Print box when you buy a new Gateway now. I got one when I bought the 15.6" inch, 16GB RAM, Ryzen 3450 version of this.

16GB of dram cost 50 bucks. 256GB SSD cost 40 bucks. it may be older gen of I5 but for 400, sounds like a good deal.
Too bad I already have 10+ laptops at home.... I have no excuse to get another one.

Realistically, would this be any good for school work? Mainly excel and accounting softwares etc.

This is bizarre to me. I have a 4th gen i5 from like 2013, with half the ram and a much slower SSD, and in no way would I consider it slow, let alone very slow. Windows updates wouldn't magically speed up a computer either. What official drivers are you looking for? Windows will download what is needed through update for the most part.

I just returned mine yesterday. I really liked it, when it worked. It acted like there was either a problem with the monitor or the cable that connects to the monitor.

Sometimes it would just not turn on. I think it was "on", but it was kind of like it was asleep and wouldn't wake up. Like just the monitor wasn't coming on. The battery was at over 90% each time it did this, and even when I plugged it in nothing changed. I tried holding down the power button to fully turn it off, then it would turn "on" again but no monitor.

Then I'd come back and it would work just fine, even if it hadn't been plugged in.

It turned off once when I was watching a video and wouldn't turn back on as well. Same symptoms as above, like it put itself to sleep, but it was plugged in and wouldn't come back on. It didn't feel like it was overheating at all.

I really didn't want to return it. I considered exchanging it but after experiencing those problems for over a week I lost faith in this model.

I have no complaints regarding the speed, it was great for what I wanted. Viewing pictures and videos that I took, playing around on YouTube, keeping track of bills, it would have been perfect for basic stuff like that.

Specs look good but I want to see one in person. I'm assuming the screen is the Achilles heel for this one.

I'd like a bigger SSD but one assumes that isn't too hard to upgrade. 16gb ram by default is awesome.

edit - read the reviews. Lots of complaints about DOA and sound problems. Buy the extended warranty I guess. Hmmmm
DOA and sound problems seem like out of box things, so maybe the issues are apparent before regular return policy would run out? (Not a interested buyer, just trying to save people money on extended warranties)
